My Dreams Revealed
posted May 29, 2008 - 9:24pmI have struggled with a recurring dream that has taken over my subconscious two or three times a month for the past year. The repetitive plot line is one of the reasons that I can actually remember this dream. Waking up from it with a pounding pulse and sweaty sheets is another. Sometimes I bring up my dream in casual conversation with my husband or a co-worker, but I never thought to input the symbols in to a dream website database to see what the metaphors were trying to tell me. It wasn’t until I heard a local morning radio program discussing dream analysis that it occurred to me to try to find out what I am trying to tell myself and why. The search results that came back were like a slap in the face and yet they made total sense for what was going on in my life at the time. Here’s my dream….
I’m always driving a navy blue pick-up truck in the far, right lane of a superhighway with heavy, heavy rush-hour traffic. Although there are never any wayfinding signs, I know for sure that I’m in either Seattle or San Francisco. It’s a nice, hot summer day and the sunshine reflects off the bay water and the massive suspension bridge that looms in the distance. The sun’s brilliance makes me squint my eyes for the duration of this dream. All of the sudden, I need to merge all the way left in order to take an exit off of the highway to get on to that bridge. Then I panic. None of the faceless drivers will let me in and they purposely block me from making my way across the lanes. I get extremely upset and start pounding the steering wheel while screaming at them to no avail. I miss the exit and have to loop around to the beginning of the highway to start over again. This sequence seems to go on for the entire time that I’m sleeping so when the morning alarm finally goes off, I am exhausted from the stress.
None of these things have happened to me in real life, so what could they possibly mean?
I found (and used) a web site that allows you to input your dreams’ metaphors and get back a definition to what they might mean at:

You can also write out your entire dream to get an analysis. Basically, it pulls out the keywords to give you feedback on them at:

Without going in to all of the smaller details about my dream’s analysis, I found out that the main icon, the suspension bridge, represents transition from one part of my life to another. But I couldn’t cross that bridge when I came to it, therefore, am I unable to make a transition at this time? And what could this life transition be? Aging? Career path?
At the same time I started dreaming this dream, I had radically changed careers going from Education to Engineering. It was a huge leap for me and I struggled with the academics of it as well as the disruption of my daily routine. Does not crossing the bridge mean I may not make it in Engineering? Hmmm, I thought I was doing so well. And that could be the caveat for interpreting dreams…Don’t let the dream interpret you.
