A Test of Faith

My experience being unemployed and how it has tested my faith.

Let’s see, I have had more than my share of jobs. And yes there is that part of me that really wishes I never screwed around when I was younger and had stayed in college and gotten a degree. But that is in the past and I am not going to dwell on it.

I have been out of work for going on 2 years now but with good reason. I got pregnant and I have been taking care of my son. Let me tell you, that is a job in and of itself.

Since my husband got laid off from work about 2 months ago we have both had to start looking for work. Today’s economy sucks in a nutshell. Unemployment is at an all time high. Every news and economic website you read says the same thing. We are now two months behind on our mortgage and we have had cut back a lot and go with out on a lot. This whole experience can really humble you and make you realize what is most important in life. It can really put a test on you and if you are married or in a relationship it puts a test on that too.

Basically it does one of two things, makes you stronger or takes you down. My faith has been tested as well. It really has made me realize that I am not in control and that my Lord Jesus Christ is. It is very hard to just give it up to Him and realize that it is all in his time and that he wouldn’t put you through anything that he feels you can’t handle. I have had faith and put it in the Lord’s hand and he has provided.

I just got hired on for a retail position with The Salvation Army today. Yes, for some people they might say it’s just retail and minimum wage but for me it is more than what I had coming in yesterday and for that I thank the Lord. It can only go up from here! I guess what I am trying to say is no matter how tough it gets stay true to God and yourself and always remember that what doesn’t kill you can make you stronger. Keeping your faith that the Lord will provide makes you stronger as well.

Still like Kids.

I still like kids. I'm writing a children's book. But I just can't stomach the public school setting. Substitutes are treated like 2nd class people by the staff, and the kids threaten to have their "lawyer Dad sue me" if I didn't let them go to the bathroom for the whole period. The public schools encouraged this behavior by cow toeing when a parent mentioned the word, "sue." Gee, did you know Arizona has 1 attorney for every 5 people? I didn't really believe every child that said that had a lawyer for a father. Besides my major was Business not Education, I was never meant to teach. Of course you have to take into consideration that you are not from the US and there are different political considerations that are to bare. Even though you don't list in your bio where you are from. I can tell. It's England, or India, maybe Wales. Supply teachers are called substitutes here, and the Head is the principal.

No Faith to Lose

I worked in a school that was failing. Although there were some committed teachers, who had been there for many years and were set to stay, new teachers moved on as soon as possible and there was a high sickness rate and a constant influx of supply teachers. The Head stayed in his office, never took classes. Many of the children had problems. You must have experienced one similar. My daughter's school wasn't perfect but if I'd have worked in a school similar to that I still think I might have stayed in education but like you I needed to leave - it didn't matter that I got on well with the students and had good results, I wasn't supported or appreciated. There could never be a more rewarding and worthwhile job - I'm sorry you've been put off working with kids.

Grammar Lesson

Usually I don't do this but as an ex substitute English teacher this one thing really bothers me. The kids would do this all the time, and apparently their regular English teacher would never correct them. It's not allot. It is two words a lot. But anyway a college degree does not guarantee you a job, I should know. I don't have a job, and I have a degree. My major was Business, but in this state you don't have to have a degree in Education to substitute teach. I gave up substituting too stressful, and you aren't appreciated by the students, staff, parents, or principal. Anyway I gave it up. It was the only job I could get, because no one else wanted it. So I not only just about lost my faith, I also lost my sanity. Kids will do that to you. Good Luck!
