Wherever the action was, Barkha Dutt was there to cover the story, be it from the bunkers of the soldiers, or the Kashmir militant’s attacks or bomb attacks.

I have included Sania Mirza on this list, as she is the first Indian woman to be seeded in a Grand Slam tennis tournament when she was seeded 26th in the 2007 U.S. Open. She has made India proud. As yet, no Indian woman has been able to reach this level in the field of Tennis.

She has been winning a lot of matches and her confidence in her own ability to make a mark on the world stage has gone up several notches. She has become very popular among the youth and is a role model for many.

Unfortunately, she has also been surrounded by many controversies on many issues. However, she still remains unbeaten as far as her tennis is concerned, and that's what matters. We hope, she will be able to win the Wimbledon someday.

Indian Women of substance abroad

thanks, idlewild. :-)) That's an idea that requires some serious study. Will see what i can do! There are of course, many Indians abroad who are doing quite well and have made a name for themselves in all walks of life. And we in India are only too happy to embrace them, even if they have long ago given up their "Indian" citizenship in order to embrace a Foreign one. After all, a mother can never abandon her children now, can she?

Indian Women of Substance: The Sequel

Maybe you should start a new series... Indian women of substance abroad or something... with people like Mira Nair, etc who are Indian and successful but no longer living there. Seeing her films has probably been the biggest factor in my learning about India and Indians (from seeing her movies, and from being motivated to learn more after seeing the films).

@Rawnak: Thanx

You are right

Technology was not Doordarshan's forte. But, at that time, there was ONLY Doordarshan. There was no cable TV yet. And Prannoy Roy was the only source for the "world news" when he came up with his "world this week" program. I suppose, Nalini Singh had no other option in those days but to report from within the studios as was the trend in those days. She definitely had guts.

Nalini Singh

She did report mainly from studios(tech. not really being doordarshan's forte!) but what is imprinted in my mind is her talking to booth - capturers (with masks and gun) right in the backwaters of Bihar. Your New Avatar

Btw, Mythman, I think your new avatar is really cool. Very "Hypnotizing" kind of effect it has.

Aishwarya Rai,

Idlewild - Aishwarya Rai has acted in many movies like Bride and Prejudice, (that's the one Mamamia is talking about) Mistress of spice, Which featured the actor from the popular TV series "The Practice". She has just recently completed a Hollywood venture with Steve Martin in the Pink Panther 2. You can watch her on the sets in this video here: http://www.xomba.com/watch_video_of_aishwarya_rai_on_sets_of_pink_panther_2 http://www.xomba.com/watch_first_teaser_of_pink_panther_2_trailer_on_youtube_video

Indian Women of Substance

Wow, so many comments all at once. Let me sort them out one by one. Mamamia:- yes, i agree with you. Actually there are so many (I am proud to say) Indian women who are doing and have done so much for the country in their own spheres of life that it is very difficult to say this one is at the top and this one is below. I feel they all deserve equal credit. I have not really "ranked" anybody, seriously, just "named" ten people who I thought were the most popular ones and who are still doing their bit and are visible. PT Usha is no doubt a great athlete and has brought a great honor to the country. There are many more like her, whose contributions have been forgotten. Ritu Kumar, Shahnaz Husain and Ekta Kapoor's Names figure in the list of the top 21 businesswomen in India, that was the reason for including them. I remember Nalini Singh, and have watched her news reports avidly in the past. She was the first woman, no doubt to start a program like that which focused on important issues (shocking) that were happening at that point of time, and I agree that it required some amount of guts to do that. Barkha Dutt, has taken journalism to the next level from there by actually being on the front line and facing threat to her own life. Nalini Singh, as far as I remember, did most of her reporting from within the studios. Arundhati Roy, has not been able to come out with any other great book after her first one, which won her the award. (As far as my knowledge is). And frankly, I wasn't really impressed with that one either. I think Vikram Seth is a better author. Mythman - Thanks for your comment. maybe you would be better able to make such a list? Since you know most of them...! I have written about these women just to showcase or provide a window from where you can see that the Indian women are taking the country ahead and are way ahead of their counterparts in their respective fields. The Indian women that are portrayed in our Bollywood films are a far cry from "Reality"! Idlewild - I agree with Mira Nair too. My only problem with her is that she is not based in India. She works in New York where her production company is based. She only did her schooling in India. All the women that I have mentioned are very much in India and are doing stuff For the country while being here. I would much rather mention "Aparna Sen" as a fine Indian woman director that I know who has made many women centric films in Bengali and Hindi cinema too. I also wished to include Dr. Amrit Tiwari, who is a dentist and has done pioneering work in the field of dentistry by her extensive research and study on the role of Fluoride in dentistry. We also had a text book of fluoride dentistry that was considered a "bible" for the students that was written by her. She was the head of department at PGI, Chandigarh where I have had the privilege to work under her. She is still highly respected in her field. She has won numerous awards both nationally as well as internationally for her contribution in dentistry. "The Elmer S. Best Memorial Award commemorates the founder of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. It is directed to individuals outside the United States who have made major contributions to dentistry." In PFA CERTIFICATE OF MERIT (International), her name features 9th on the list. I am proud that I got the opportunity to work under her supervision. I have learnt a lot from her. Thank you all for your interest in this article.
