My Own Shrek

My Own Shrek

Today my love and I are rewatching Shrek, the not-so-traditional fairytale. While watching Princess Fiona's rescue I commented to my boyfriend that Fiona's complaining about the rescue not living up to her fantasy was something all girls experience. We wait for the knight in shining armor – the one with the incredible body, chisled cheeks and long, flowing blonde hair -to sweep us off our feet and take us to a magical forest with no chiggers, ticks or other biting creatures where he will kiss us. Then the birds will sing and all the cute little woodland creatures smile knowingly at each other and...well if you've heard one fairy tale you know the story.

I think this is why I like Shrek. He's not Prince Charming. Fiona isn't really a physical beauty (and quite honestly she's a complete bitch when she is physically beautiful). We see them face a more difficult beginning than the typical fairytale relationship. We also see Fiona let her guard down and when we do we see the inner beauty that makes Fiona the Ogre more appealing than Fiona the Beautiful Princess.

I then compared this story to our first kiss – after an outdoor performance of Romeo and Juliet. It happened at the doors to the bathrooms. Romantic, huh? He laughed and said, “Can't we say storage area when we tell that story?” I don't think so. I like that my man was hesitant to treat me like a princess at first, so much so that on our first date he told me to bring my own dinner. Don't take that to mean he didn't have manners because he did. He treats me like a queen now (kinda like Shrek treated Fiona). He is caring, kind and helpful. I love my Shrek.
