My Problem With American Idol
posted March 19, 2009 - 12:04amYes, we watch American Idol at our house. All of us enjoy the singing competition and there's a lot to love this year, especially with Adam Lambert (wow!) and his funkadelic version of Ring of Fire.
I just have one problem with the production of the show and I don't think I'm alone. What is up with the group singing number at the beginning of every already too long elimination show? No, I don't want to hear a snappy little song with cheesy choreography and the contestants vying for best smile for the camera.
It's the same routine every week and the producers seem unapologetic about it. Boys fade back, girls will twirl, boys up front, girls weave - and weave again - through the smiling boys. Line up two by two, sing some notes, twirl away and let the next pair in. Girls, mosey up to the judges stand, sing to Simon, step back, step back, sweeping gesture with your hands. Boys, give me energy, think of Wham! That's it! Bow...smile...wave...
Please, producers, take note and stop with these shenanigans. We are already subjected to the Ford commercials (this week had the group throwing water balloons at eachother) and I don't think I can take much more. Since I'm on the west coast, I look forward to reading the spoiler alerts coming from the east coast so I can avoid the show all together if I want.
And this makes sense...Justin Guarini has told the world that the Idol hopefuls lip-sync during this part of the show anyway!
And finally, I present to you another group that also tried their hand in singing and choreography. Strangely enough, it looks exactly like the same dance moves that American Idol uses. Put the Brady Brunch next to a Ford and you're good to go. Enjoy!
