My Top 10 Eclectic List of Favorite Books
posted November 5, 2009 - 10:12pmWith the colder months creeping slowly in, it is more tempting to stay indoors and curl up with a blanket, something hot to drink, and a great book to read. The problem is sometimes finding the right book to read. Whether you like something dramatic, funny, horror-filled, suspenseful or mysterious, perhaps one of the books I've suggested in my top favorites below will appeal to one of you. I've included a little bit of information about each book as well.
1. The Precious Present by Spencer Johnson - This is a short book that will inspire anyone to revel in each and every moment and appreciate life for all that it brings your way. It can be read in one sitting, and after reading it you may feel compelled to pass it on to a loved one, friend, neighbor or anyone who you might feel would appreciate it.
2. The Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer - Okay, I realize they are hyped up quite a bit due to the movie that is already out and the others on the way that are based on this series, but there's a reason for the hype! These books truly are an amazing read. As thick as the books are, they are a fast read, dark in content with lots of vampire - human drama, action and emotion. Whether you like the movies or not, the books are very worth reading. I prefer the books over the movie(s), even though I plan to still see all of the movies. If you have lots of time on your hands these are perfect reads to sink into.
3. Pat The Husband - A Parody, a Cider Mill Press book - If you're in need of a short, humorous pick-me-up in your day, this book will have you laughing in no time. While it may not be something all men will appreciate, I am certain all women will. It is based on the baby book Pat The Bunny, but with a human take on things and filled with funny-because-it's-true humor.
4. Good Night Moon by Margaret Wise Brown - While a children's book in format and content, for the poetry lover this book is a soothing read perfect for bedtime, regardless of whether you're sharing it with a child or reading it by yourself.
5. Looking For A Friend by Rod McKuen - Poetry lovers may love the fluidity of the poems and sentiments about friendship found throughout this book. It is one of my favorite books of poetry by Rod McKuen and is short enough to be read in one sitting.
6. Journey of Souls by Michael Duff Newton - An inspirational read with eye-opening information for the soul searcher looking for answers about the afterlife and what lay in store for our souls once we've passed on. If you enjoy John Edwards and James Van Praagh, this may be right up your alley and may answer more than you ever dreamed of knowing.
7. The Book of Bunny Suicides by Andy Riley - Not in the mood to read but like comics? Books 1 and 2 both offer loads of laughs with little to read. Many are movie and tv themed as well. Beware: If you aren't the sort to enjoy jokes about furry animals commiting seppuku, this is not the book for you.
8. Zombie Haiku Good Poetry For Your... Brains by Ryan Mecum - For the horror lover who doesn't mind a zombie story told in Haiku with pictures to boot, this is right up your alley. The haiku poetry is entertainingly funny yet gory. The book nods to many zombie movies out there such as Night of The Living Dead. If you like zombie movies and enjoy poetry, this may be the perfect mix for you.
9. The Perfect Nightmare by John Saul - If you like Stephen King, you might also enjoy John Saul's books, and this one in particular. It is a book filled with suspense and mystery with a story so chilling due to it's believability, it may have you sleeping with the lights on and keeping a closer tab on your kids. While it is a story with content that certainly could happen, remember, it is just a story. It is just a Perfect Nightmare.
10. Dangerous Liaisons by Choderlos de Laclos - If you've seen the movie Cruel Intentions with Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon and Sarah Michelle Geller, then you know the story, and now you are aquainted with the movie's origins. It is a French epistolary novel, the story told in letters between the characters which is every bit as cruel, if not more so, as what was portrayed in the movie. One difference to note is that the book's characters are adult French aristocrats rather than wealthy teens in New York.
While not all of these books will appeal to everyone, hopefully one of them will appeal to you. Happy reading!

This is a good listing. I especially liked your mention of Twilight and the Perfect Nightmare. There's nothing like a good book to curl up with on snowy evenings. Thanks for pointing us book hounds in good directions!
