My Top Ten Song Lyrics

My Top Ten Song Lyrics

I love lists. It’s a simple as that. I like seeing people's favorite whatevers and then call them idiots for not thinking of my favorites - of course from the comfort of my home computer. So, that being said I have compiled my favorite song lyrics of AAAALLLL TTTTIIIIMMMMEEE!!!!< span>:

10. "Oh, no! There goes Tokyo! Go Go Godzilla!" by Blue Oyster Cult, song Godzilla.

Really, any band that can have a top forty hit with a song about a fictional monster that was not tied in to a movie or a TV show should never have to pay for anything the rest of their lives. Amazing!

9. "I am IRONMAN" by Black Sabbath, song Ironman

Similar to the Godzilla song, this is a song about a comic book character. Again no tie to a movie or TV show. Seriously, is there anyone above the age of 30 that can not sing this line on cue when they hear the song. If you can't you will be picked up and made to be Ozzy's interpreter for the rest of your life. I had my kids (ages 4 and 6) sing this line before the Ironman movie last week. Classic.

8. "I can see through mountains, watch me disappear, I can even touch the sky. Swallowing colors of the sounds I hear, am I just a crazy guy?" by Ozzy Osborne, song "Flying High Again"

These lyrics let the listener know just how F'ed up Ozzy could get. This was fair warning - if you’re going to party with Ozzy, you had better be ready to strap it on!

7. "Here I am on top of the world. All I need is a beautiful girl." by Van Halen, song Beautiful Girls

What guy doesn't want a beautiful girl? No, sorry not me, I'll take that troll in the corner over there. But these lyrics seem to hide a little loneliness don't they? Here is a man who has reached the top, he has everything but he has no one to share it with. All his success means nothing if he doesn't have anyone to share it with. And you thought this was just another David Lee Roth womanizer song - didn't you?

6. "Daddy didn't give affection and the boy was something mommy wouldn't wear." by Pearl Jam, song Jeremy

Along with one of Stephen King's Bachman books (which he has taken out of print), these was the first pop culture pieces to address the classroom violence that loomed on the horizon. For the record Pearl Jam does not like discussing meaning behind their lyrics. They just want the listener to get their own meanings, make it their song. Whether you believe this is song about a classroom suicide or school violence, it is a powerful song. To me this line is the most powerful in the song. This boy, Jeremy, was shown no love by his father and his mother did not feel he fit into her lifestyle. Are there that many songs out there that give that stronger a characterization?

5. "Subdivisions, in the high school halls, in the shopping malls, conform or be cast out." by Rush, song Subdivisions

How bold is that? You must be a part of some social group or you will not able to take part in normal society. It also speaks to most humans need to belong to something. If you don't have this need you find yourself living on the fringes of society.

4. "A man wants to work for his pay, a man wants a place in the sun, a man wants a gal proud to say that she'll become his lovin' wife. He wants to give his kids a better life. Well Hello Brother." by Louis Armstrong, song Hello Brother

How much better can you sum up the common everyday working man? When you strip it to its bare bones this is the wants and needs of everyone. And the last line is what does it for me - a kind of welcoming, a kind of acknowledgement, a "so do I".

3. "You gotta believe in someone. Asking who is right, asking me who to follow, don't ask me, I don't know." by Ozzy Osborne, song I Don't Know.

Straight forward. To me Ozzy is saying - I have my thoughts and ideas but I don't know if they are right or if they right for you - make up your own mind. Who knew Ozzy could be so deep?

2. "'cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance well, they're no friends of mine." by Men Without Hats, song Safety Dance

Oh, snap! Bring it biatch! Your friends can suck it 'cause they don't dance. This man really likes to dance. Maybe Westside Story was more true life than we thought.

AND 1. "And now he's home and were laughing like we always did, my same old, same old friend, until a quarter to ten. I saw the strain creep in. He seems distracted and I know just what is gonna happen next. Before his first step, he's off again." by Pearl Jam, song Off He Goes

These lyrics are extra powerful to me. It's about a part time friend. Someone who will hang out for a while then leave when they get bored and you won't see them for a long time. This is someone you care deeply about but they seem to always be moving on to the next thing.

Well there it is! Feel free to debate it or give your favorites.

I know so few of the songs you list (hey, I'm a relic!), it's hard for me to comment on them - but I'll mention a few lyrics I especially like. "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen (especially "She tied you To a kitchen chair She broke your throne, and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the hallelujah") "Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk" by Rufus Wainwright ("these are just a couple of my cravings Everything it seems I like's a little bit stronger A little bit thicker, a little bit harmful for me." "I Want You" by Elvis Costello (more for its relentlessness than for any one lyric) "Casanova in Hell" by the Pet Shop Boys (of all people) ("Back in the library, his revenge is his story.") And then, in totally different veins, just about anything by Stephen Sondheim, Johnny Mercer and Frank Loesser (all Broadway or Broadway-style lyricists).
