My Treasure Hunting Adventures - 1
posted March 21, 2008 - 12:25amJust a few days ago, I was on my way home from work. I
intended to get home, change, and head out to buy some lumber so I could build another 3 teeter totters.
As I approached the house, about 4 blocks away, I drove by a couple of kitchen cabinets with a "Free" sign posted on them. Ofcourse I spun the truck around and dove in for a quick pick-up. I figured these 2 cabinets would be perfect additions for my garage/workshop. As I loaded the second cabinet, one of the home owners came out and asked me if I would like another cabinet? I told her sure. And I helped her wheel one out.
Then she asked me if I would like a stove and dishwasher. I took a look at them and told her yes. They were in good shape, and only 5 years old. She said they had decided to upgrade them from when they bought their home.
I drove home unloaded the cabinets and drove back to pick up the appliances. When I drove around back to pick up the dishwasher, I found a pile of recently demolished lumber from part of thier remodel. It was in excellent shape and looked like it would yield more than enough lumber to build 3 more teeter totters.
I loaded up and was back home in a flash. Got the garage more organized, Installed the hanging cabinets, processed some of the lumber into cut lengths for the next project, and set the appliances aside to be cleaned and sold.

Not bad for just driving on by. They were happy to get rid of everything. And it opened up the potential for me to try to make a little money so I can upgrade my air compressor to one that is more suitable for running air tools. :)
Rule number one to finding amazing deals is to keep your eyes and your mind open. You see tons of things lying around all the time. But if you can't conceive of the potential uses for the items, it appears pointless to pick up or save anything.
Lucky for me & you plenty of people don't bother to be creative or even think twice about throwing away perfectly good items. It is always fun to challenge yourself to find as many uses and profitable ways to work with things you find, build, and repair.
Happy "Free-Hunting!"
