The Mysteries of Microwave Popcorn

The Mysteries of Microwave Popcorn

Please note that the author is eating a bowl-full of microwave popcorn while writing this xombyte.

I haven't bought microwave popcorn in a long time. It's not on my shopping list of usual suspects nor is it one of my favorite snacks. I tried it once or twice but I really can't stand the smell that steams out of the bag when it's done being 'waved. It reeks mostly of the rotten-egg-family of smells and if that doesn't get you, the delicate taste of faux-butter/all-chemical stuck on your tongue for hours afterwards reminds me of why I don't care for it.

So, I admitted that I'm eating it now and it's simply because I had a coupon. I thought it would be different. You see, the coupon that sucked me in was for organic popcorn (made with organic palm kernel oil, potassium chloride, natural butter flavor and annatto color...I'm sure the annatto is from a natural source, right?)

It tastes awful. I am forever off microwave popcorn. But while reading the label on the side of the package before I chucked it in to the recycle bin, can anyone tell me why 2 tablespoons of unpopped corn is 170 calories with 110 of them coming from fat? And why 1 cup of popped corn is only 30 calories with 20 of them coming from fat? I realize that the popped corn is less kernels than the tablespoons-full but that's still a lot of calories when it's unpopped!

And more importantly, who eats 2 tablespoons of unpopped corn slimed in chemicals? Was it necessary to print that comparison on the box?

I can't handle all the questions that the mystery of microwaved popcorn raises...it's easier for me never to speak of it again.

Please note that the author has finished the bowl of popcorn and is now trying to uncoat her tongue by drinking hot liquids.

Popcorn

Mia, you are doing the popcorn all wrong. Never microwave popcorn. Didnt you realise it breaks glass, sometimes it even catches fire too? What you need to do it put them in a covered utensil and put them over the stove. It does taste better. Yes even the organic ones. Try it and tell us ;-) Make Money. Join XOMBA! Microwave Popcorn

very cute commentary. I saw on NBC's "The Doctors" (at 3:00 pm. EST weekdays) a review of how the chemicals used to keep the butter from leaking through the popcorn bag is bad for people. I think there was a story a couple of years ago how employees at a microwave popcorn factory were getting ill due to exposure to so much of those chemicals. Having said that, the best microwave popcorn I've found is Act 2, Butter Lovers. and Extreme Butter. We can't escape from harmful chemicals in this society, so they might as well taste good going down. If you're after more coupons, I've got a good post on many, many sources of coupons on the internet. With respect, Lori of shawnandlori

I've never been a huge fan of popcorn

I'm not fond of the way it squeaks against my teeth. :) ↑ Grab this Headline Animator

You are probably doing yourself a favor, Mia

I was on the popcorn "wagon" for many years because I read and understood that bits of popcorn stays in our colon for many years because it gets wedged into the various folds. Before then, popcorn had been a regular part of my movie-going experience (along with soda and nachos!). That, and the fact that butter is melted fat! Now that I've fallen off the wagon, as it were, my wife and I only buy Orville Reddenbacher's Movie Theater Butter microwave popcorn in a case from Costco. It has the best flavor of anything we've tasted and we're even open to doctoring it with the different popcorn flavor powders available (sour cream and onion is my favorite). There may come a time when I eschew popcorn altogether, but I may always be subject to the Pavlovian mouth-watering at the smell of fresh popping popcorn with butter. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

Thank goodness I've had lunch already jdubhub

because the one thing I dislike more than popcorn is Coke (Pepsi, etc.) and to mix the two...well...yuck!! :) I'm trying not to be a snack-food elitist (as wHATUP contends) but it is what it is. See you guys at the movies (please don't sit next to me, ha ha!) Peace, Mia NW Please visit my recent posts here Get paid to be a xombie! Join us here

Mmmmmmmm...butter coke!

The only way to make the snack taste better is if you take your buttery straw when you are done and immediately put it in your drink. There are few things butter lovers like more than a nice butter coke. Mmmmmm...fizzy fat. Slurp! Seriously, though. I'll have to remember that trick for the next time I'm at a DIY movie theater. The ones we have here do all of it for you. To their credit, though, most of them add popcorn, then butter, more popcorn, more butter, etc, to ensure equal distribution. Maybe they ought to have wetnaps instead of napkins, though. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

Oh I'll Tell!

Its just whether you should read it or not. Its pretty simple. You know how when you go to the movies and you want butter on your popcorn? Ok well maybe not you - popcorn snob but let's just say for agruement's sake that you do. With the dispensers you only get it on the top - no buttery-flavored goodness on the bottom. To remedy this you insert a straw (easy there I know I said "insert") into your popcorm and put it up to the dispenser. You do this insertion at vary depths (easy!) to get total coverage. Now I have a trick I do by cutting a whole in the bottom of the box but I'll save that for another time. :) href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/WhatupsXombyte/~6/1">

Almost afraid to ask wHATUP

but what is the straw trick? And how is it applied to movie popcorn? I'm a PG 13 kinda girl so feel free to tell me to mind my own business, ha ha. Peace, Mia NW Please visit my recent posts here Get paid to be a xombie! Join us here
