The Myth of the Liberal Media: The Propaganda Model of News

The Myth of the Liberal Media: The Propaganda Model of News

It is conventional "wisdom" that the media is biased. It is also true that there is a provable slant to the left, correct? Right? Wrong!

This video is a preview of a study done that breaks down the "model" of the mainstream news media to its most basic structure, where we find that the slant of the MSM is not to the left but to the right (or, more accurately, from the center to the right.)

How can this be? What about all those talking heads over at Faux News, like Bill O'Reilly, telling us the only real reason that more articles are not written about Barack Obama and the Democrats--things that everyone "knows" to be true and things that have been shouted by conservative bloggers--is simply because the reporters themselves are Democrats and they aren't going to let their "boy" look bad.

Fortunately, the truth is much easier to see for those who bother to dig deeper. As the old saying goes, follow the money. Look at the people/corporations who actually own the media outlets, look at the editorial boards of newspapers, and look at the people who do the most advertising with media outlets. That is who calls the shots for the media and those people and their elitist mindsets slant middle-right.

To say that reporters who write stories are responsible for the politics of the media source is like saying the workers on the factory floor at GM get to decide which cars to make. Think about it.

Some myths die hard

What I have found in my research for different articles is that the "liberal media" has become a rallying point for anything that makes the Right look bad. Even if I were to place a link to this article in every comment section where someone mentioned the "liberal media", those people would respond to me as if I had horns and a tail and sat next to them in a pew in their church. Lib. in the Sense that We're Free to Think What We Want about It

Of course, the "corporations" run 'who says what the speakers want to say'; if you know where your paycheck comes from, you're less likely to bad-mouth that source. I ~would~ suggest that 'corporations' thus stay anonymous in their payments to 'the speakers'; but then the media would HAVE to be conservative, as sources are LESS-LIKELY to pay badmouthers (so the media would all-in-all LIKE EVERYTHING THE WAY IT IS). So there's kind of a catch-22 there for 'the speakers:' if they're in it for 'the people as individuals,' they can't be in it for the money; if they're in it for the money, they can't be in it for the (non-mob) people! But the people (as a mob lol) don't want to be a mob! Yet one cannot operate in the world without its 'currency!' ---Uncle MythMan Enlightens You on Money Here! Bread and Circuses

When Rome was having trouble with the economy, wars and rumors of wars, and a host of other problems, the emperor gave them bread and circuses to take their minds off the other things. Between sports, Hollywood, and the talking pinheads on TeeVee, those distractions are pretty much covered. When it comes to a real discussion of important issues, you can actually see the eyes glaze over on most people. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

celebrities are pointless

jdubhub> agreed, but people seem to find a huge amount of time for celebrity gossip and sport - both, in my opinion, utterly pointless. The amount of brain-time that goes into analyzing scores, averages, form, who said what when about whom, who plays when and where and what colour socks they wear. All of it encouraged, all of it a diversion from important matters that us plebs should not think about because important adults are taking care of business. I was one of them

Ever since I turned 18 and registered to vote--well, up until recent years--I was a true blue Republican, especially during my time in the Navy as a Reagan enlistee. During Gulf War I, I listened to Rush Limbaugh lambaste those nasty liberals and also bemoaned the liberal media like everyone else. What changed for me was George W. Bush and 9/11. I started using the Internet for more than just reading the transcripts of what they posted on Fox News. I started digging deeper. It was rather shocking to find that the media wasn't liberal at all and that I had been lied to (or, more correctly, I let myself be lied to) all those years. I am still working on the whole digging-to-find-the-truth thing, but I am no longer in danger of labeling the media as liberal without facts anymore. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

I remember, a few years ago,

I remember, a few years ago, Pat Buchanan pretty much admitting that the whole "liberal media" bit was just nonsense. Still, there is no shortage of people to perpetuate this ridiculous myth. ↑ Grab this Headline Animator

If you don't have time, make time

Thanks for the comment! Part of what is lacking in this country is a lack of commitment to make time for the things that are truly important in the Big Picture. We have become a nation of video game addicts and there-was-a-book?-movie-watchers. Everything has to be now, now, now. But, despite having all the conveniences of an advanced industrial and technical nation, we have less time than ever. Why is that? It is a common complaint by many that "there isn't enough time". Funny. I was under the impression that we all have the same 24 hours in a day, broken down into 60 minute increments of 60 seconds each. If some people are able to accomplish a lot with the same amount of time, then the problem isn't a lack of time, but not using it efficiently. If I told a person who made that complaint that I would pay them a million dollars for the use of five minutes of every hour of their day, but they had to be awake for the deal to work, you can bet your hat that they would make every effort to free up that five minutes. They may pop vivarin and stay up for the whole period of time just to make sure they didn't sleep through the allotted amount of time. So, the question becomes a willingness to find the time. If they valued their freedom or knowing the truth, they could easily come up with a few minutes a day to fact check an article or news story. It may just take the right motivation, like losing their job or lots of money when this economy tanks because they weren't paying attention. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

the ignorance virus

I know, have said it before. People just don't want to look beyond their noses, then scream when they've been lied to. With the internet there is no excuse any more to be ignorant. yeah, watch your Propaganda News then read some alternative news site, then do the unthinkable... make a judgement. If your neighbours are encouraging you to be ignorant, either inform them or ignore them. Money for your Thoughts - join now Epi-BV
