NASA: Buzz Aldrin weighs in

Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon along with Neil Armstrong on Apollo 11, has written in the July-August edition of "Popular Mechanics" has weighed in on what he believes is a much more workable route for NASA.

One of his ideas is to make a human landing on Mars' moon Phobos and from there people could operate robotic machines on the surface of the planet itself.

The veteran astronaut insists: "The agency’s current Vision for Space Exploration will waste decades and hundreds of billions of dollars trying to reach the moon by 2020 - a glorified rehash of what we did 40 years ago. Instead of a steppingstone to Mars, NASA’s current lunar plan is a detour."

He also believes instead of creating a "moon race II" the next effort needs to be an international effort...
