Nastia Liukin Wins Gold, Shawn Johnson Silver in Gymnastics All-Around
posted August 15, 2008 - 12:12amFriends and teammates Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson of the United States captured gold and silver medals in the women's gymnastics all-around competition at the Beijing Olympics.
They both overcome a strong challenge from the young Chinese team.
For Nastia Liukin, the gold medal was the latest Olympic treasure for the family: Both of her parents were Olympic athletes for the Soviet Union. Father Valeri Liukin was an Olympic gold medalist, and her mother was World Champion rhythmic gymnast Anna Kotchneva. Nastia was born in Moscow and her family moved to the U.S. when she was a toddler. She now works and trains in Plano, Texas.
Shawn Johnson, from West Des Moines, Iowa, came into the Olympics as the top U.S. gymnast. She was the 2008 U.S. All-Around Champion and the 2007 World All-Around Champion.
