Nationalization of Refineries (Communist Takeover)

House Democrats are calling for the nationalization of refineries, like may communist and socialist nations before them.

I hope they can run that business better than thay have run social security, or medicare or any of the other failed social programs...

About the backtracking on pension promises made

My dad retired a number of years ago and twice the company he had worked for went the the courts and asked to change the amount of the retirement, and make their contribution to the retirees health less, so more goes onto the retired person. It is sickening but they can do this legally by saying "If we don't do this then we will go under then no one will have anything." They did it twice and it worked both times. Sorry about getting off subject, but ssi is scary to think about. Get this widget!

Let's not forget that

Let's not forget that several weeks ago, it was Maxine Waters (D - Washington) who told the oil executives that she wanted to nationalize the oil industry. Now we can add Hinchey (D - New York) to the list of Democrats calling for nationalization of the energy industry. Combine that with Obama's Blueprint for America and you can see their socialist tendencies. It's not looking good for Democrats. *If you're interested in reading my articles, Click Here.

Savings Rate

Maybe they shouldn't be planning on living on it, but many folks that I know are... most of them can not even keep bills paid much less save anything (and some of it is very much their fault). I read somewhere recently that the savings rate in the U.S. was actually negative last year for the first time since the Great Depression! Which means also that people are saving less now than they have in many generations. Amazing! - - - Read Bytes & Blurbs by Phloydius - - -

Planning

Considering how modest SS payments are, I doubt many people in the middle class would be satisfied planning on living on just that. (And it's pretty easy to find out what you're expected payments will be.) The U.S. has a pitifully low savings rate, and then people are surprised when they don't have enough money to retire on.

Social Security

Agreed on the three legs -- which failed -- as people PLAN(ed) on it being the only source of retirement... to the point that they are suprised they can not live on it. Social Security was suppose to be an investment (although meger) and the money set aside for retirement, and it was not, which is another failure. There are no easy solutions, and it may be able to be fixed / replaced, and that is for the People to decide. - - - Read Bytes & Blurbs by Phloydius - - -

Social security

"Are you saying that senior citizens living on social security are not living in poverty?" If a person's only source of income is Social Security, they may well be living in poverty. But Social Security was NEVER meant to be a person's sole means of support. Ever since it was begun, it was meant to be one of the "three legs" of retirement income, along with a pension or retirement fund and the person's own savings. Unfortunately, many people now don't have pensions because their companies (or former companies) are backtracking on the pension promises they made. Like I said, many elderly people were living in poverty before SS came into being. If you're proposing eliminating SS, that would throw a lot more elderly people into poverty. That creates problems and doesn't solve any.

Social Security...

Social Security is one of the biggest failures in our government's history. Are you saying that senior citizens living on social security are not living in poverty? And how much longer will it last? Do you think in 50 years that social security will still be around? There is no 'trust fund' or savings. Our taxes today pay for those benefits today, and those taxes are high. - - - Read Bytes & Blurbs by Phloydius - - -

Pretty suspect...

That "urgent" bulletin from Fox News (consider the source) mentions that "House Democrats" are pushing for nationalization, but one of the only statements the article makes on the subject is: "Among other things, the Democrats called for the government to own refineries so it could better control the flow of the oil supply." It quotes ONE Democrat as saying the govt should own the refineries, and it sounded more like he was making an off-the-cuff remark than a serious proposal. Social security is a failure? You really think so? Before SS came into being, senior citizens made up one of the largest groups living in poverty in the U.S.; SS has pretty much eliminated that.
