While it's mostly an adventure game, there are lots of hidden object games as you play, along with many logic puzzles. Be prepared to jump, because there are plenty of shocking surprises, and it's packed with suspense.

Playing Campfire Legends: The Hookman is like watching a really good horror movie. Be prepared to jump, because there are lots of shocking surprises. The first time a cat jumped out at me and hissed, I nearly hit the ceiling! This game uses lots of horror movie techniques to get you to scream, like sudden jolts when you least expect them.

While it's mostly an adventure game, there are lots of hidden object games as you play, along with many logic puzzles. For example, in order to break into the log cabin, you need to find rust remover and an old rag, along with a screw and screwdriver and knob. Or, to turn on the lights you need to find all the fuses, and then figure out how to piece them together by using very limited clues scrawled on the wall. It's the perfect challenge for experienced players!

As you play, you can earn extra hints by catching fireflies. The objects are smoothly blended into the scenes, so they're tough (but fair) to find. Be warned that there are lots of dark scenes, which adds to the ambience but also the challenge. What I most enjoy about this game is how clever the puzzles are while still being reasonable. You can figure them out without needing any hand holding, even though they force you to think.

The addictive value – through the roof! It's hard to stop playing. The story is well integrated into the game, so that everything makes sense and feels real. Some tasks are a stretch, and have you spending time repairing or fiddling with things that you probably wouldn't bother with in real life, but it's all part of the fun.

Campfire Legends: The Hookman is an excellent thriller HOG adventure for Halloween, or any time you want a scare. The horror is more psychological than gore-based, making it a real jumper.
