Game Review:
Romance of Rome is a hidden object adventure game that has you playing as Marcus, an Ancient Roman trying to win the right to marry the Emperor's daughter. To do this, he must find the Emperor's stolen relics, along with winning the respect of the Roman citizens and increasing his social standing in Rome. This game is challenging, but a lot of fun to play!
Finding objects is tough, but fair. They are often partially hidden, or color blended, or even semi-transparent. The sizes also vary from what you are shown. It's not an easy one for beginners, but experienced players who want a challenge will certainly find it here.
You get unlimited recharging hints, and there's no timer, so the pace is relaxed. As you play, you get to travel to different Ancient Roman city scenes like the coliseum, the library, the pantheon, and the port.
What's cool is that the objects are mostly fitting for the Ancient Rome setting. You find things like an abacus, a Roman bust, and a Viking helmet. You're shown pictures of the images, so even if you aren't sure what an object is you can still find it.
Part of being a Roman leader was winning the respect of the citizens, which is another thing you must do to win the game. Each citizen will have special tasks for you to complete, which you need to do to keep them happy. These mostly involve finding more lost objects.
Marcus' social standing is also important. Marcus gains social status as he earns money and finds objects. You can buy him goodies in the marketplace to increase his social standing, too, like a puppy or a new tunic.
It's not just straight hidden object game play. You also pick up inventory items that you can use in other scenes to solve puzzles. Some of the puzzles are a stretch, but most are logical, like putting a worm on a fish pole, or giving cheese to a mouse.
Romance of Rome is a beautiful hidden object adventure that is sure to please fans of the genre. The music and graphics are gorgeous, making the game a real treat to play. It's tough to win, but the challenge is refreshing, and the whole atmosphere is engaging.
