Nesae 7-8

7- MEN HAVE A SHARE OF WHAT THE PARENTS AND CLOSE KIN LEAVE BEHIND, AND WOMEN HAVE A SHARE OF WHAT THEIR PARENTS AND CLOSE KIN LEAVE BEHIND, WHETHER IT IS LITTLE OR PLENTY, A DETERMINED SHARE.
8- AND IF AT THE TIME OF THE DIVISION YOUR CLOSE KIN, THE ORPHANS AND THE POOR WERE PRESENT, PROVIDE THEM WITH SOME OF IT, AND SPEAK TO THEM KINDLY.

Before Islam, women and children did not inherit.  Only males of an age which makes them able to fight were eligible to inherit.
Allah the Highest gave women, children, men and infant the right to inherit, even an unborn child have a right to the estate of their parents and close kin.  Man and wife inherit from each other, and it is all according to a determined system established by Allah the Highest.  Daughters did not usually inherit, and if a man has only daughter and a wife, they might not inherit any thing before Islam.
It is reported that before this Ayah was sent down, a Muslim woman called Om Kagah who had three daughters, lost her husband.  His cousins were the closest males to the deceased, and they did not want to give the woman and her daughters any part of the inheritance.  She complained to Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him.
The sharing of the men and women of the estate of the deceased is regardless of the size of the estate, whether it is small or large.   However, there are things which can not be divided without being destroyed, like a house, or a piece of furniture or electric appliance.
In this case one inheritor may buy out the shares of the others to have the item for himself;
Or the item may be sold and each inheritor has his share of the price.
Allah the Highest also commands us to give something to the inheritance for those who attend its sharing out of the blood relations, and the orphans and poor.  This is an act of charity which is conducive to compassion in the society.  This charity should be done with good manner and with kind words, as charity should always be.
