New Cigarette Tax Will Kill Before The Cigarette Does

New Cigarette Tax Will Kill Before The Cigarette Does

Come wednesday and the biggest ever tax increase on tobacco products takes place. The tax in the US has been increased from 39 cents to $1.01 for cigarettes and from 19.5 cents per pound to 50 cents for chewing tobacco.

Dubbed as a public health move one can see through the effort as being the only soul saver in the dwindling economy. The retail sales in other industries have gone down substantially in the last one year and consequently so has the tax collection. Therefore the government has targeted the ever reliable, 'smokin' hot' industry for increasing the tax collections so as to fund the bailouts.

Even though the anti-smoking advocates say that increasing the prices of cigarettes reduces consumption, not many people have quit smoking solely because of the price of the cigarettes.

If the government was really bothered about the public health they would have shut down the tobacco industry long time back. The fact that they don't says a lot about the motives. Sometimes I start doubting if the cigarettes really affect the human body. Maybe it is just a marketing gimmick to keep the product alive in the public memory.

The deaths directly attributable to tobacco will definitely come down since at this rate the cigarette tax will probably kill a person before the cigarette does. But will someone tell the powers that might be, that the cause of death will still remain cigarettes.

Someone, somewhere, has to consider the adverse social impact the ever increasing prices of cigarettes will have. It is a given that cigarettes are addictive and difficult to give up. Considering that a lot of people in the lower economic strata also smoke, the increased expenses on smoking are directly going to impact the spending power of the family on other essentials. Or does the government think that all men and women will always be morally conscious of putting their families before their habit?

Don't You See It?

I can say it because I have already seen it. There are more robberies being reported in my area and on the news, the robbers themselves are admitting that they needed money because of the economy. Jobs are harder to get and guns are easier. But you are right. There is no perfect government. As long as one person, be it president or prime minister, holds himself higher than the rest of the population, and receives more power as a result, there will always be conflict.

more robberies

snoopy01 how can you say that crime will go up if the price of cigs go up. its not the price of stuff going up its because thers not enough jobs because of this stupid resession, and come on there will allways be crime as long as we have governments like the u.s. and the uk.

More Robberies

I read somewhere recently that the vices are rarely affected by the economy no matter how bad it gets. What we can look forward to, I suppose, is people stealing, breaking into our homes and vehicles, robbing businesses, and just ripping us off in general in order to buy cigarettes now, as well as their usual drugs of choice. I have no doubt that the tobacco lobby is much too powerful to ever be shut down.

I haven't bought a carton

I haven't bought a carton of cigs in years. I buy them by the pack. I tend to smoke less that way. : ) I smoke about one pack per 2 to 3 days, depending on boredom and stress. Last I heard, a carton, 10 packs of 20 cigs or as Althea put it, 200 cigs is about $50.00 here in California. This varies of course by location. In comparison to the UK, California is not far behind and is catching up fast! MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles! Avatar: Betrayal and Retribution http://www.valkyrieart.com/Poser1.html

cig tax..

Sorry, forgot to mention how expensive cigarettes are in the UK.. UK - 200 cigs, £60.70 (pounds) - 87.3 USD Spain - 200 cigs, 30 (euros)v- around 40 USD Gibraltar - 200 cigs, £12 (pounds) - 17.2 USD Just shows you how the UK is taxing the smokers... By the way, around most English pubs report 50% drop in takings, otherwise a high percentage have closed altogether...

UK stealth taxes..

Great article... There are over 90 stealth taxes in the UK. At risk of renaging on their original promises as far as income tax is concerned, Gordon Brown and the Labour Government have introduced over 90 stealth taxes that make it absolutely impossible for a normal family to survive. To be honest I was going to state some of the nuggets of info here but I've put a link here, not sure if it will work so will xomblurb it too.. http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/garbagegate/item2/stealth.htm

Government and taxes

Yes, the government does tend to kill some of the very things that keeps them alive. I'm suprised the tobacco industry hasn't rebelled against California in some way, but maybe they have and I dont know about it. With a new state sales tax increase starting the 1st of April and a cigarrette tax, California is taxing itself right out of revenue. California also has a fuel tax which just adds to the cost of gasoline not to mention the environmental rules to sell certain items in California. Auto parts and smog certificates, ugh, the list goes on. Some cities have taxes on top of the state tax and I avoid buying anything in those cities if possible. The way I see it, the next tax will be a climate tax. MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles! Avatar: Betrayal and Retribution http://www.valkyrieart.com/Poser1.html

Precisely my thoughts

Pretty soon people will be growing and processing tobacco in their home / community gardens. That would surely kill the industry and the government too. Thanks for the comment MJ Bare Essentials

Funny politics and taxes

I guess taxpayers are bailing out the banking and smokers are suppose to bail out California? The first smoke tax failed in the "good government goal" of inticing people to quit and I'm sure that is why they have chosen to profit from a "sure thing" again. A lot of people I know buy their cigarettes from Indian Reservations because supposedly they are tax free there. When will the government learn... Health and revenue - the two don't mix. Hmmm... wonder what it would take to grow my own? ; ) MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles! Avatar: Betrayal and Retribution http://www.valkyrieart.com/Poser1.html
