New Orleans

New Orleans

I am so sick of seeing these national news programs diss New Orleans.
It just goes to show you that you should never believe anything you hear and only half of what you see.
I live right on the out skirts of New Orleans and I call it my city.
We are a very caring and loving towards one another. Yes we have our bad apples, as well as other places.
We are rebuilding. The process may be slow for some, but for the most part those who want to return to the area have taken charge for themselves. They are not waiting for government handouts. I know people who have lost everything they owned and I see these people going to work everyday and coming home to clean and gut their homes. They are living in a 2nd floor bedroom and cooking off of hotplates. They are not complaining about what the government has not done for them. They have taken matters in their own hands and started rebuilding their lives. There are people all over this great city doing this. Those who truly call New Orleans their own are not waiting around for help. Go into any number of neighborhoods and look at the community come together. People are rebuilding through the help of each other. Through family and lifelong friends.
Then you have people who expect to stay in Houston or where ever and they expect to get foodstamps and financial assistance then they want to come home to a rebuilt house. Get out of here! If after a year you have still not found a job you probally will never get a job. Is it above you to take a job at a fastfood rest.? The classifieds are filled each day.People do not want to work. They expect handouts!.
Well to all those people I say stay away from New Orleans. We do not need you here.
We are a diverse group of people from all backgrounds who love our city and we will always call it our home.
We will help our neighbors rebuild. We will be ever so grateful to anyone who would like to lend a hand but we do not expect handouts!
I think Katrina did this awesome city a favor by weeding out all of the pathetic losers.

Excuse my ignorence of your situation.

I am here in California and I have seen nothing but reports about crime going up in Houston and people who show no gratitude to their new city and Dr. Phil and Oprah and blaaaaah. It has always been about African Americans and I wanted to barf every time. When you said the word Houston, a red flag went up big time and I said ," here is another racist ". I only know what I have heard and as I titled my comment, excuse my ignorence. I'm glad I was wrong about you regarding racism and apologize. Can you explain your harsh statements which show no empathy aside from what I misconstrued as racist comments. This is hard to understand by someone who has needed help herself in the past.

Racist?

Let me set a few things straight here. When I spoke of people who sit around and wait for handouts did I mention a race? I know different races and there are moochers from each one. There are people in Lakeview who are waiting around doing nothing because they expect someone else to do it for them. Then there are others who work 40+ hours a week and come home to a gutted house and start working on it. No matter how tired they are. I understand people who need help doing some things as in electric, plumbing, etc..... but go and drive around the hurricane affected areas and notice the homes that are still filled with trash and have made no progress. And please make sure to notice the homes where the owners are doing what they can to rebuild. Sometimes right next door! As far as public assistance, I myself have been on foodstamps. There was a time when my husband lost his job and we needed the help but we no longer recieve them because we both are employed. They are suppose to be temporary assistance not ongoing. There is no excuse why someone in this area does not have a job, they are all over and they are paying very well. Public transportation is available from Baton Rouge to New Orleans everyday. My husband and I both helped out at the Red Cross shelter in our area. I took people into my home when I didn't have the space or money to do so. I've donated clothes, food, money and my precious time to the people of this state so please don't call me a racist.

Most reports about Houston seem to be about...

African Americans. At least the ones I have seen. So that was a red flag to me that screamed racist. If i'm wrong then I apologize but then her statement on Katrina doing a favor to " weed out " reeks of somebody without empathy for anybody, any race. I have empathy for her having to go through hell herself so I understand the stress but still....

I found nothing racist in

I found nothing racist in this article. There was no mention of race at all. There are many "white people" on food stamps and they also sit on their ass and collect government handouts, if that's what you're talking about, Anthony. A lot of what she wrote is true. There are a lot of residents of New Orleans who have not gone back to rebuild. Instead, they hang out, jobless in their hotel rooms and receive checks from FEMA. Then they complain about not having anything while they trash their hotel rooms and demand more "relief" that they can spend on strippers. These things have actually happened. So, I don't think she was wrong for what she wrote. It may not have been delicately put, but I wouldn't expect that from someone in her position.

Hmm, I was giving her the benefit of the doubt.

Glass half-empty? Half-full? Well...I'd need to gather more evidence (read some of her other posts) before concluding that she's very much a racist at heart.

What are you, her lawyer ?

only kidding A. Just waking you up if you haven't had your java yet. But really though A, I can understand what you said, really I do. But tell me if you don't possibly see a racist at heart as well or at the very least a person who has no empathy for others at all.

anthony b

It sounds like she's just frustrated about the whole ordeal.

Johnandtra, do you know what the word Empathy means

I'll start by saying I gave you a 4 vote and that raised your average, nuff said. What started as a nice post with tribute to a great city and it's people turned into racist tripe. That is the only way I can see it. How can you sit there and judge people who have gone through that and have been displaced. Why would you begrudge them food stamps and assistance. That is exactly how the system should work for these people. Your disgusting statement on giving thanks for Katrina weeding out the " pathetic losers " totaly exposes what makes you tick. To bad Katrina left the biggest loser behind, you.

More Info

I graduate this year in June and I was considering working in New Orleans because I think it is an Amazing city. From California it looks like it was nearly wiped off the face of the planet. It has made me appreciate the city that much more for its culture, its music and its history. Can you give me the name of the newspaper there or a web address? I would love to look at the classifieds. I heard about that music village Harry Connick Jr. is helping to build and I think that is the coolest thing I have ever heard. New Orleans is going to be rebuilt and it is gonna be better then ever.
