New Planets
posted August 18, 2006 - 9:34pmHas anyone followed this? Astronomers from around the world have convened to arrive at a mutual consensus about what exactly it means to be a "planet." For decades there has been a lot of contention about whether Pluto is technically a planet. While it's been included as one of our solar system's 9 planets, many feel it fails to meet certain criteria and should be excluded.
It looks like the new standards agreed upon will actually keep Pluto as a planet, and add 3 more to our solar system! Including Pluto's moon, Charon, and a far-out body called Ceres. The planets will be broken up into two classes, though.... the 8 "classical" planets, and 4 "plutons."
The 4th pluton, 2003 UB313, is the only one with out a Roman god name. It has the nickname Xena, but that sucks. What name would you suggest for it?

Yes. I am disappointed with the IAU
