New Study On Small Packages of Junk Foods
posted August 28, 2008 - 8:42amAccording to a detailed finding on the Journal of Consumer Research October 2008 issue, eating food, particularly junk food in small packages may not help your goal to eat less. Two marketing studies found that some people tend to eat more calories when junk food portions and packages are smaller. Contrary to common belief that smaller packages means smaller intake or as some people would say less guilt might not be completely accurate.
One new study led by Rita Coelho do Vale at the Technical University of Lisbon, found that people believe that smaller packages help them regulate consumption but the fact is they tend to increase consumption.
In fact manufacturers are releasing more and more products in smaller packages. As you noted in recent years, several brand name products from cookies to chips to candy have been released in smaller packages and are promoted as having just 100 calories. Sales result showed that the strategy works.
During the previous study people who are given more tend to eat more. But now based on the new result the common trend is directly the opposite.
The important thing is to control. Since regardless the size of the package, it is still junk food. And junk foods are literally junk from the name itself.
