Maria is new to this city.
She doesn't know its steel
and grit and neon filth,
its XXX and breathy lies.

Stepping off the bus,
she sees a busted sign:
"So, you wanna be a star..."
She gulps down hard,
then takes her first step.

There's nothing to do now
but throw herself into this life,
a life other than the dirt roads
and cornfields and silos of home.

Night falls, and Maria makes her way
down the boulevard, vampire eyes
upon her, and sees another sign,
its simple red letters forming the word
that seems to be calling out to her her her:
