New way to treat blindness

A research was published online by the New England Journal of Medicine in conjunction with the presentation at a medical meeting in Florida and was reported by the Associated Press showed that scientist for the first time have used gene therapy to improve sight in people with a rare form of blindness. The procedure has restored the vision of four out of six young people who got the treatment.

Based on the report, two volunteers who could only see hand motions were able to read a few lines of an eye chart within weeks.

Stephen Rose, chief research officer of the Foundation Fighting Blindness said that this is a phenomenal breakthrough.

If successful in large numbers, this technique has the potential to reverse blindness from other kinds of inherited eye disease.
