New Change Is Coming

While researching some information about Samoa I ran across a press-release announcing the issue of a new 25-cent US quarter dollar by the US Mint. Having not heard of such I went to the official website of the United States Mint to get caught up on what I had missed.

What I found out was this new quarter is actually the third to be issued in 2009, of a set of six quarters.

2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters

"District of Columbia" native son Duke Ellington, the internationally renowned composer and musician, seated at a grand piano...Sculptor: Don Everhart.*

"Commonwealth of Puerto Rico" features a historic sentry box and a hibiscus flower with the inscriptions, PUERTO RICO and Isla del Encanto, which means "Isle of Enchantment." Sculptor: Joseph Menna*.

Guam* depicts the outline of the island, a flying proa (a seagoing craft built by the Chamorro people), a latte stone (an architectural element used as the base of homes) and the inscriptions, GUAM and Guahan I Tanó ManChamorro.

American Samoa* depicts the ava bowl ("tanoa"), whisk and staff in the foreground with a coconut tree on the shore in the background and the inscriptions, AMERICAN SAMOA and SAMOA MUAMUA LE ATUA, the motto of American Samoa, which means "Samoa, God Is First."

U.S. Virgin Islands* features an outline of the three major islands, the yellow breast or banana quit, its official bird; the yellow cedar or yellow elder, the official flower; and a Tyre Palm Tree with the inscriptions, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS and United in Pride and Hope, the official motto of the territory. Sculptor: Joseph Menna

Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands* represents the wealth of the islands in its natural resources of land, air and sea. Near the shore stands a large limestone latte, the supporting column of ancient indigenous Chamorro structures. A canoe of the indigenous Carolinians represents the people's seafaring skills across vast distances. Two white fairy tern birds fly in characteristic synchrony overhead. A Carolinian mwar (head lei) composed of plumeria, langilang (Ylang Ylang), angagha (peacock flower) and teibwo (Pacific Basil) borders the bottom of the design near the inscription, NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS. Sculptor: Phebe Hemphil

And its just not six new quarters being issued.  There is the new Native American One Dollar Coin. Replacing the eagle and the 17 stars on the reverse will be a Native American woman planting seeds in a field of corn, beans and squash and the inscriptions “United States of America and $1.” The new reverse design is titled “Spread of Three Sisters” Reverse designed & engraved by Norm Nemeth.

The new reverse design joins the familiar Sacagawea design issued every year since 2000.

Other new releases include 4 new Lincoln pennies commemorating the 200th year (1809-2009) of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, a collector edition "silver" dollar of President Lincoln, and various other denominations of coins and designs made of silver, gold, and platinum.

Like it or not, change is coming!
