NFL Announces 2009 AFL Legacy Games
posted May 5, 2009 - 12:42pmThe National Football League has announced for the 2009 regular season, the AFL "Legacy Games" to honor the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the American Football League. In 1960, a league to compete with the NFL was formed with original teams Dallas Texans (now Kansas City Chiefs), Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, Houston Oilers (now Tennessee Titans), San Diego Chargers, New York Titans (now New York Jets), Boston Patriots (now New England Patriots) and Buffalo Bills. The Miami Dolphins joined in 1966 and the Cincinnati Bengals joined in 1968 to round out the ten teams.
Of course, the AFL merged with the NFL in 1970 and, after a reshuffling of teams, became the American Football Conference.
During the 2009 NFL regular season, the NFL will honor these teams by having the original teams wear their historic jerseys during nationally-televised games to commemorate the anniversary.
