Nidal Malik Hasan: Analyzing a Killer (Yahoo!)
posted November 6, 2009 - 8:45pmThe title of a recently released Yahoo! article is: "Troubling portrait emerges of Fort Hood suspect". The first three sentences provide a glimpse into exactly how "Troubling" this person was. "His name appears on RADICAL internet postings". A cause for concern. quot;A fellow soldier says he fought his deployment to Iraq and argued with soldiers who supported US wars". OK, so this man did not seem to get along very well with his peers/colleagues, although we may have to concede that the opposition to wars may be philosophical. "He required counseling as a medical student BECAUSE OF PROBLEMS WITH PATIENTS". So this guy did not get along with the people he worked with AND he did not get along with THE PEOPLE HE WAS SUPPOSED TO HELP. This was a BIG and GLARING problem that was somehow missed.
So how are people painting a "troubling portrait" of this man? According to Noel Hasan, Nidal Malik Hasan's aunt, "SOME PEOPLE CAN TAKE IT AND SOME PEOPLE CANNOT". This is defensive. "He had listened to all that and HE WANTED OUT of the army". He was disgruntled. A possible explanation is that, according to Yahoo!, "In an interview with The Washington Post, Hasan's aunt, Noel Hasan, of Falls Church, Va., said (that) HE HAD BEEN HARASSED ABOUT BEING A MUSLIM IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 ATTACKS and HE WANTED OUT of the military". Again, an EXPLANATION, NOT AN EXCUSE. Noel Hasan adds that her nephew "did not have many friends" and that "the army WAS HIS LIFE". Well, he isn't going to make any friends by going on shooting rampages and this has brought the morale and reputation of the army CRASHING DOWN because of his despicable acts of violence.
Furthermore, "There have been reports that he was harassed for his Muslim religion, but the official says (that) THERE IS NO INDICATION HASAN FILED A COMPLAINT WITHIN THE MILITARY ABOUT THAT". Here's another issue. Hasan is a grown-up. If he doesn't tell anyone what's going on or what his problems are, HOW ARE OTHER PEOPLE SUPPOSED TO FIGURE OUT THE FACT THAT HE HAS PROBLEMS AND HELP HIM?
According to Nader Hasan, a cousin, "HE WAS MORTIFIED (humiliated/shamed) by the idea of HAVING TO deploy". So, this guy REALLY doesn't want to be in the military.
According to Col. Kimberely Kessling, deputy commander of clinical services at Fort Hood's Darnall Army Center, "YOU WOULDN'T THINK THAT someone who works in your facility AND PROVIDED EXCELLENT CARE TO HIS PATIENTS (this is not correct), WHICH HE DID (this is unbelievable, based on all the other descriptions), could do something like this". Sadly, life has its share of disappointments and for Kessling, this may well be one of them. "In my personal interactions, THERE WAS NEVER ANY INDICATION that he would do something like this". Again, glaring warning signs were missed. Kessling describes Nidal Malik Hasan as "a quiet man who wouldn't seek the limelight" (well, he is firmly in "the limelight" now) and expressed "shock".
Finally, according to Faizul Khan, a local imam at a mosque Hasan used to attend, "We hardly ever got to discussing politics. Mostly, we were discussing religious matters, NOTHING TOO CONTROVERSIAL, nothing like an extremist". So Khan thinks that there is "nothing too controversial" about religion? HE IS KIDDING HIMSELF.
