No one wants to hire their Dad or Mom... (the age-thing)
posted May 26, 2008 - 2:47pmFor older folks who are looking for new employment, what they do not realize is that younger-folks, who usually do the hiring, just don't want to hire anyone who is like their Mom or Dad.
And, they don't mean to be that way, its just an age-thing. When I was in my 30s, I didn't want to hire my Mom or Dad either. And, they really don't focus on the age-thing, it's just something that happens.
I, at, at almost 57, experience it all the time. Telling younger folks; "you'll be there some day," means absolutely nothing, because if you haven't been there, you don't know, and won't know.
I am moving through a process now to change jobs. And, in the process of spending the past nine years tinkering on my B.A. (29 credits to go), I have experienced age-discrimination many times, but, its not a focused-discrimination thing, it just a time-thing, and time, or revolutions-around-the-sun, or age, is just something that happens.
There are a few careers where age doesn't lessen a person. I went with Conflict Resolution, after realizing one of the leaders of Mercy Corp was 90 years old, and, sadly, there's always plenty of work in Conflict, from neighbor-mediation, to full-blown wars. I aim to see that my new occupation will become a worthless occupation some day, when we all learn to live, without conflict.
Aging is conflict. Hopefully, some day, the conflict with aging will end too, but, keep in mind to tell a younger person; "you'll be there some day too," is foolish, because they can't imagine about something, unless they've been there, and, as, silly, as, it, is, they'll look back some day and say the very same thing, to someone younger, than they.
Looking back is always easier than looking forward. We know the past, but, we don't know the future, no one does. Why force young people to do what you can't do, look into the future!
