No Sex in my City

No Sex in my City

So, in a valiant attempt to get in touch with my female side, I decided to watch the movie Sex in the City on HBO the other night. Now I will admit that I used to be a fan of the HBO series. But, I fell off the wagon about midway through the third season and this movie did nothing to bring me back around.

While I appreciate the kinda "this is the life a single woman" aspect of the movie, I couldn't help but shake my head is disgust at the horrible portrayal of the characters in this movie/series.

Samantha can love no one other than herself because she is selfish and cannot throw herself into a single loving relationship. When her marriage/relationship goes through a lull, she finds herself yet again drawn to a beautiful man. Instead of finding ways to love her man and relationship, she abhors its restrictions. Rather than try to find ways to resolve this conflict she gives in and resumes her self destructive lifestyle.

Miranda becomes cold and distant to her husband Steve. She in no small way pushes Steve into something he regrets. Steve begs and begs for a return; a reconciliation. She resists and resists until Carrie tells her to take him back and she does. They get some brief conseling and, boom, her and Steve live happily ever after.

Carrie's assitant is a mini-Carrie. She gets dumped by a guy who says she is not the one. She loves highly priced handbags - why? Because that is what women are supposed to like. Her and her man reunite at a Christmas party. She, of course, take him back and gets marries. Again, happily ever after.

Charlotte....well Charlotte provides the comic relief and also gets her happily ever after.

Big is portrayed as the anti-dude. He hates all things revolving around commitment and is way too cool for you or me. He schemes to bend Carrie to his ways.

Carrie herself is the biggest idiot of all time. Big dumps her on their wedding day. She is crushed. Then, amazingly she sees him in their love nest and takes him back, realizing that it was all her fault all along. Are you kidding me? This guy has done nothing but stomp on Carrie time and time again. But, of course now it is different. Now she has bent to him so, he has gotten exactly what he wanted and she got nothing. Oh yeah, they live happily ever after.

Horrible movie. Horrible portrail of women and relationships.

True or False

The thing about the 'women' on Sex in the City, is that they do exist in reality. When they are put on the television and we see them in the childish, selfish, immature behavior, we want to label it as 'entertainment' and not reality. Afterall, who could be so shallow as Samantha, marriage oriented as Charlotte, career defined as Miranda and write a column for a newspaper from home like Carrie in reality? And what girl doesn't hope for Big: the dark, brooding man who only laughs in our presence, coming to whisk us away to live in marital bliss...happy everafter! So, their relationships with men are a bit on the high school side of life. It is a good escape from my reality. ; ) Art mimics life MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles! Ha ha ha....

I must say my favorite was Miranda as well although I watched the show mostly because of Samantha. She made me laugh at how she tried so hard to actually date like a man.Check out more of me @ www.xomba.com/user/jmc1003 www.freegreen411.com www.freegreen411.blogspot.com www.metacafe.com/channels/jmc1003 www.youtube.com/jmc1003 www.bukisa.com/jmc1003

I liked her too out of all

I liked her too out of all of them.

Carrie

She is my least favorite character on that show/movie - of the girls, I was much more of a fan of Miranda. Visit my homepage here

WHatup thanks for calling

WHatup thanks for calling Carrie Bradshaw out here--she is an idiot. haha

Thank you ladies

My main reason, back in the day, for turning off the series was the way it portrayed men. Big was a pompous ass and all the other guys were strictly non-fleshed out caricatures. I sucked it up the first coupla seasons thinking this was women getting back at men for the portrayals of them. But then it just got absurd. To me Steve was the only redeeming male character they ever had and they even tried to write him out. I've yet to meet any woman who resembles these characters. My ex's sister lives in NYC and her and friends in no way resemble these character although they revel in their stories. I don't know. I could maybe buy it if these ladies were not held up as what is a single woman in her 30's/40's in a big city is like. Visit my homepage here

Refreshing Male Analysis by wHATUP

Your analysis of the film is refreshing but there must be better ways of getting in touch with your feminine side. You could do some cooking or cleaning... THAT WAS A JOKE IN BAD TASTE. It is healthy to have a decent man criticise these characters in a public forum - particlularly Carrie and Samantha. The main audience for the film and DVD tends to be younger women some of whom might aspire to their traits in their blind quest to become more attractive to men. Your points just might assist one or more to re-evaluate their aspirations. What perplexes me about the series and film is that these characters (given their occupations and positions in them) must have been oustanding students and (are seemingly) not from privileged backgrounds - i.e. they've achieved through merit. These are played down in favour of their "any pole in any hole" [a play on "any hole's a goal"] and their addiction to exclsuive, elitist fashions. Still, this is slightly better than aspiring to the Julia Roberts character in Pretty Woman... Thanks wHATUP +1

Not Mary Kay

I will not watch the movie or any of episodes of this show based on principle. The idea of old women (who call themselves 'Cougars' apparently) going after young men is just too revolting a concept. I'm disgusted enough with the real-life cases of female teachers having sex with young male students. Mary Kay LeTourneau I'm not. Ughh! I'd rather go skiing down Sarah Jessica Parker's nose. She is one ugly woman.
