Obama and the Eastern Europe Missile Defense Shield: Yahoo!

The title of a recently released Yahoo! article is "East Europe: Rancor (bitterness, spite or venom), relief on missile shield plan".

The first sentence is: "Czechs and Poles expressed rancor and relief Thursday that President Barack Obama had scrapped plans for a US missile defense shield in Eastern Europe - REFLECTING DEEP DIVISIONS over a proposal THAT HAD ALSO ENRAGED RUSSIA". So the Czech Republic and Poland have mixed feelings but Russia is "enraged". Boy, this is getting complicated.

According to NATO's new chief, this was a "positive step".

"..a Russian analyst said Obama's decision will increase the chances that Russia will cooperate more closely in the heated dispute over Iran's nuclear program". Wow. Does this mean that Russia supports the screaming Mahmoud Ahmedinejad?

"Ex-leaders in the Czech Republic and Poland bristled (i.e. they were very angry) at Obama's reversal, saying it reinforced a growing impression that WASHINGTON NO LONGER VIEWS THE REGION AS INDISPENSABLE TO US AND EUROPEAN SECURITY INTERESTS".

According to Jan Tamas, an activist who organized several protests, "It's a big victory for the Czech Republic. We are happy that we will continue to be able to live in our beautiful country without the presence of foreign soldiers". This sounds much like the situation in Iraq (i.e. some Iraqis want American troops out, even if this means that there will be more sectarian violence).

According to Jan Paroubek, a Social Democrat and a major missile defense opponent, this is "excellent news".

According to Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer, the president called him overnight to cionfirm that "his government is pulling out of plans to build a missile defense radar on Czech territory".

Fischer continued that there would be no change in the "strategic cooperation" between the US and the Czech Republic.

On top of this, "Fischer said that the US now considers the threat using SHORT and MID-RANGE MISSILES GREATER THAN ONE USING LONG-RANGE ROCKETS".  Similar situations include the disputes between North & South Korea and Israelis & Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. Fischer told reporters that "That was what the Americans considered the most serious threat".

In Warsaw, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk quoted Obama as saying the "proposal of an alternative strategy WOULD NOT AFFECT the security of Poland"   or general European security.

So it seems like the latest thoughts/remarks about the US are generally negative.
