"Obama Waffles" Get Vendors Removed from "Values Summit"
posted September 13, 2008 - 5:48pmTwo men who were selling boxes of what they called "Obama Waffles" were asked to leave the Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C. after complaints that the images on the box were racist.
The front of the box shows a caricature of Obama's face, with a bug-eyed appearance and exaggeratedly large lips. The top flap of the box shows Obama in an Arab turban (some groups have been putting forth the rumor that Obama is a Muslim, despite the fact that he belongs to a Christian church). Having Obama on a box of waffle mix is also a play on the old image of Aunt Jemima, a black advertising icon that had been long decried as a racial stereotype. The two men were doing a brisk business selling boxes of the Obama Waffles for $10 a pop at the exhibition that is part of the Summit, which is sponsored by FRC Action, the lobbying arm of the conservative group the Family Research Council. A spokesman for FRC Action said he was told the boxes of Obama Waffles were a spoof of Obama's policy stands, but that he had not examined them closely.
Sales of the Obama Waffles were cut off on Saturday by the Summit's organizers, who said they had not realized that the boxes displayed "offensive material." The Obama Waffles had been on sale since Thursday.
The two men selling the Obama Waffles said the product was intended to be political satire.
