The Coveted Red Stapler

The 1999 hit film Office Space had quickly gained a cult following. The film itself as a whole was not particularly outstanding. But so many pieces of it are so absolutely funny that you can’t help but enjoy it.

One of my favorite elements would have to be the Red Swingline Stapler, coveted by the character Milton. Once it was taken from him, he loses his mind and any semblance of mental stability and decides to burn the whole building down.

This stapler was created for the film by the prop department. Because they needed a bright enough color to be easily seen on film and chose red. Simple enough.

In a stunning show of flexibility and corporate agility Swingline never missed a beat, as they quickly went into production on the “Rio Red Stapler” and made a killing selling a knock off of the movie version. The name “Rio Red” may even be a reference to Milton's eventual tropical retreat. This model has become the best-selling model in Swingline history.

Yes I did say “Knock-off”. Sadly Swingline’s Rio Red Stapler is far from being much like the gorgeous coveted red stapler from the movie. It is even more sad to have to make a cheap reproduction of an item that already had your name on it.
But, it isn't like the masses really care about the difference.

Quality and features of the true Red Stapler are:
- Dramatic Candy Apple Metallic Red Finish
- “Handwritten” Swingline name in white on the sides

Quality and features of the Rio Red are:
- Plain Red Finish
- Oval shaped logo plate on the top (sometimes in silver, sometimes in gold)

I watch office space

at least twice a year, usually when I get tired of going to work! I act the same way with my 3 hole punch...once someone borrows it, I have to go track it down. Have you seen my stapler?

I loved the movie... great comedy! Here is another great site for Office Space movie stuff! http://www.techcomedy.com/www.redswinglinestapler.com/ Chris

Sweet Video!

Thanks for adding to the info! And posting the video. One thing I searched for several times after watching the movie was the wristwatch that they would the close-ups of. But, no matter how hard I tried I couldn't find the exact make and model that they used. I really like nice watches and although I only have 3, I consider myself a collector. I never knew that!

Amazing! It is almost word for word from the movie. I have my own coveted Silver Swingline that I keep lock in my office drawer. Shirt says "Don't call me a Cowgirl until you've seen me ride"

The Origins of Milton and Office Space

It was all based on an old cartoon Mike Judge had drawn.
