Old Wives Tales - Health Mantras Busted
posted July 15, 2009 - 9:04amWe've all heard them -- -- old wives tales.... handed down over the ages. But are they of any consequence health-wise?
'If you're cold, you'll catch a cold'
Common cold is caught due to exposure to the cold virus -- nothing less nothing more. You lose it in SEVEN days with medicine and in a WEEK without medicine...hahaha there you go..
'Eight glasses of water a day'
If your diet is high in other sources of water -- beverages (soups and juices, even tea and coffee qualify here), fruit and vegetables (watermelon, cucumbers) you can comfortably knock off a glass or two.
So, drink when you're thirsty and not just to complete your day's quota.
'A bad day will make you grey'
There is no actual scientific evidence to support it. Greying is just another sign of growing old, like wrinkles. It's in our genes. Ask GEORGE CLOONEY....
'Reading in poor light will ruin your eyes'
Old wives' tale this. Yes, it can tire the eyes cause fatigue, slight watering but long-term damage is usually very rare.
'Coffee is bad for you'
Off course, Coffee is a diuretic (it tends to increase the flow of urine, which causes the body to get rid of water), but make it up with a glass or two of water.
'A vasectomy is a protracted and painful procedure that could damage your sex life'.
A vasectomy is a relatively simple and painless procedure that only takes a few minutes to perform & doesn't affect anything.
'Acne is caused by not washing properly'
Acne is caused by the effects of hormones on sebaceous glands &
particularly affects teenagers and can also be increased by stress. Cleaning your face too often can actually increase acne.
Depressed people need to 'pull themselves together'
Depression is an illness involving an imbalance of brain. It is not a character flaw or a sign of personal weakness.
