On love
posted September 26, 2006 - 10:34pmThere’s a line in a Belle & Sebastian song: “If you find yourself caught in love.” Both images of “finding yourself” and being “caught,” as well as that of “falling” in love, invoke a total lack of control. In this sense, love is something that happens to us, without our awareness or control, maybe against our wishes; it yanks us into its clutches. Like inadvertently finding yourself caught in a tangle of thorny branches and falling off the edge of a cliff or something.
The lore is that love is something that is just as pleasurable as it is painful. But are we just trying to make the most of something we’ve given up trying to stop from happening? If we had control, would we “let” ourselves “fall” in love?
I’m not being cynical, honest; just ruminating.
