On World Environment Day: Only 8 Years Left To Help SAVE The World.

June 5, 2007 is celebrated as World Environment Day. This was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on Human Environment. Another resolution, adopted by the General Assembly the same day, led to the creation of UNEP.

The theme that’s been chosen for Environment Day 2007 is “Climate Change.” The world, as it is today, is facing the mother of all time constraints and we are left with just 8 Years before a planetary catastrophe will overtake the earth because of global warming. According to a study done by the scientists of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change, the year 2015 has been set as the deadline for such an eventuality. Therefore, we need to quickly find a solution to save the world.

An Oscar winning movie by Al Gore, “An Inconvenient Truth” made a beginning towards this end by revealing the disturbing truths behind Global warming . Bollywood is also now taking up the cause very strongly, by celebrities vowing to put in their contributions in every little way that they can. Mr. Amitabh Bachchan has also said, according to the media reports that we need to take proactive steps in order to bring about climatic changes that may save the world from harmful effects of global warming. We can all make a difference by doing our bit. The questions that need to be answered here are:
1.What's the number one thing you are doing to help tackle climate change?
2.What one extra thing could you do to help tackle climate change?
3.What's stopping you?

Here are a few examples of what one can do to contribute towards this cause:

1.Conserve electricity and water by switching off the lights, fans or any other electrical or electronic devices etc. when not in use. And use water as sparingly as possible without excessive spillage or wastage. Close all taps tightly when not in use.
2.Recycle whatever you can. Proper management of garbage disposal can be very helpful towards this end.
3.Conserve Fuel in whichever way you can. Use public transport or carpool system to save fuel. Reduce the number of vehicles in use.
4.Plant trees and contribute towards adding greenery to your locality or neighborhood.
5.Spread awareness on this day by taking out street rallies, bicycles parades, green concerts, essay and poster competitions in schools, tree planting, recycling efforts, clean-up campaigns and much more. In many countries, this annual event is used to enhance political attention and action.
On this World Environment Day, let us examine the state of our environment. Let us consider carefully the actions which each of us must take, and then address ourselves to our common task of preserving all life on earth in a mood of sober resolution and quiet confidence.

Thanks again Les!

Thanks again Les! I know I am replying to this post after a long time! I was just going through my posts and happened to read your comment again and realized that I had not replied to your comment! I am truly amazed by the depth of your knowledge and wisdom! Thanks for sharing it with us! It took me some time to study and find out from the internet what you were talking about, and I must say that I am enlightened! There is so much that we are ignorant about and yet we go around behaving like "we know it all"! I really don't know "what" scientific evidence Pub keeps talking about! What I do know is, that everything that exists on Earth or in the Heavenly galaxies are way beyond the grasp of the human intelligence! What he calls scientific "facts" gathered by data collection is all crap! I know this for a "fact" because I am a science graduate! I have seen and been in the "research" department for some time and know how these "facts" and "figures" are manipulated by one and all for personal satisfaction! The end result may really not be what it shows at all! They are all just "hypothesis"'s! Yes, science has made many discoveries and inventions, and they will continue! But, we need to remember, that the "discoveries" are not over and there's lot more that will unravel itself slowly over a period of time and it will be endless, for new things evolve with changes! That is what "evolution" is all about! Thanks again Les!

You're right

You're right rawnak...Galileo did have a theory. But he did not sail around the world and prove it. There are several parts to establishing scientific "facts". There is observation, data collection, experimentation...but what you seem to ignore when it comes to "global warming" is the fact that there is no experimentation to prove that any of the observations are human-caused. All we have is observed changes, a large amount of data collection, and then TADA! - speculation! There are no facts because they cannot be proven. There are no facts because we don't know enough of the variables, or how they interact in our atmosphere. There are no facts because we can't properly and precisely measure all of the changes in our atmosphere and climate. So, go ahead and keep believing that you have "evidence" of anthropogenic global warming. The sad truth is, you've been bamboozled just like half of America has been. No matter how hard you look and no matter how hard you attempt to push this agenda, the fact is - there are no scientific facts that prove what you claim. Sorry.

keep it up

do not let pub deter you

You are welcome! Of course!

Eratosthenes, while in Egypt contemplated an obelisk. He was making a map of the world, as known as it was and with distances. I know you surely know this tale, but pub should be humored by it. Like Galileo as you point out, who some 1500 years later, could point with telescope to the heavens, see Copernicus' truth, or the glory of god spread universal of Giordano Bruno -- and the many others who had to be of a different (reformational faith) to see the glory of God expressed in the heavens differently than the platonic dictates adopted by the Church (mostly of Paul). The obelisk cast a shadow, a small short one -- but one small shadow. Eratosthenes observed that shadow even on the longest day when the sun was farthest north in the sky -- and noted that there was a short shadow. He heard of a deep, deep well, in Seine where the sun at noon was reflected back into your face when the sun was above you! Tropic of Cancer, and he hired a man to pace the distance in as straight a line as possible from the obelisk to the well in Seine. With that distance, and the length of the obelisk's shadow, he had measured the circumference of the Earth. In fact, Seine was not exactly on the tropic of Cancer but close enough to let Eratoshenese conclude the circumference and with the idea of a radius and greek approximate pi -- the size of the earth. Columbus was way off, but heck. All sorts of 'lengths of degrees' were common for sea-farers in an ignorant Europe. Europe suffered long under the Church. (The earlier Romans and Greeks ofr either empire suffered under Plato's ideas. But what we as a species lost to the Christians also included the wealth of knowldege in Hypatia's library. The Library of Alexandria, finally destroyed by the Christians in glorius ignorance! (Glory to God!) So scholars and the literati or readers of latin and greek all knew the earth was round-- and many knew hows to measure it--but by then islam covered the ground -- and for a while flowered until called back to a fundamental mecca. Now an iranic conundrum. (China will not have to suffer this, nor india, homes of old thoughts! Of puzzles puzzeled, and often solved. Were I capable of a humanistic faith, I would choose an Eastern view. Unfortunately, knowledge (and how we acquire it (science)) caught me young. It is the way some are made; the same 'way' others are not! I could not help but post a Denier's Trap, a take-off on the US-PNAS report on atmospheric geoengineering to cool earth. I admit my humor is sometime macabre, or like gahan wilson, just (chuckle) sick! Keep posting!

"Scientific Evidence"

First of all thank you all folks for reading my post and thanks Les for coming to my rescue! This is for publius who probably did not study "science" subjects in school or does not know anything of history either well, ignorance is bliss, so dwell in it! I would like to enlighten him that it was not the "sceptical sailors" who discovered that the earth was round, rather it was only after Galileo saw the moon through his telescope that that theory was believed after much ado and controversy by the Catholic people who did not want to believe him. Read the trials and travails of galileo in the link provided below. Just to increase your knowledge in science and history, I wonder if you've heard the name of the Scientist "Galileo" and his revolutionary contributions to astrophysics and "Newton" too. Here are some links to their history and contribution to science and their effects. http://hua.umf.maine.edu/Reading_Revolutions/Newton.html http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blgalileo1.htm http://www.catholiceducation.org/articles/history/world/wh0005.html http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Global_warming http://www.whrc.org/resources/online_publications/warming_earth/scientific_evidence.htm I think this should be sufficient evidence for you.

I'm sorry, Less...was there

I'm sorry, Less...was there some scientific "evidence" of human-caused climate change in that comment of yours? I don't recall seeing any...

Interesting, how any environmental post is by pubby decried?

I wonder what affliction of mind is at the bottom of this? I'm willing to bet if the fellow opened his mouth in an interview for a position or job for actual work, there are only a few words about pollutants, waste products, climate warming you would have to make to get him to peg himself. It would be nice to keep all these comments as a history of the view of this poor fellow. I know potential employers or subscribers would like to have this clear vision on their team, wouldn't you? Good thing no job hooks into this. Where does he hide from the future? What to do if something makes sense. Belittle the idea. Rawnak! Nice posting. Thoughtful.

Actually...there is very

Actually...there is very little scientific basis to the entire "climate change" debate. If you have some evidence, by all means, share it with us! And let me correct you about your historical perceptions. The people that believed that the Earth was flat - THEY were the "consensus". The skeptical sailors that decided to take on the "dangerous" journey were the ones that proved eveyone else wrong.

Uh Uh...

I really do not agree with what publius has to say! But, that's his personal opinion. There is scientific basis to everything that is said. Ok the time factor that figures here may not be that accurate, but that does not negate the fact that we human beings are responsible for the harmful effects on this planet and the climate. Ages ago, people like you also refused to believe that the earth was round! Nevertheless, it was proved to be correct by scientific research!

OH, NO!!! The world is going

OH, NO!!! The world is going to end!!! Quick...turn off all your lights and hold in your flatulence!!! We only have eight more years!!! Am I the only one who has grown very tired of hearing this crap every year? Didn't Ted Danson tell us in 1988, that in "ten years" the oceans would be dead? Didn't Al Gore make a ten-year prediction in his 1992 or 1993 book? I know he made another one a year and a half ago. When will it ever stop? Ever heard of Paul Ehrlich? This is so incredibly ridiculous. Wake up people! There are more important things we need to worry about than "climate change" that we no influence on.
