One More Weekend

One More Weekend

I've gone about five months sans paycheck. Monday marks my first "grown-up" paycheck. Nevermind that I've already spent whatever I bring home. Nevermind that I probably need to get a second job. It's a milestone that I made it all these months on meager dividends. To celebrate our last weekend of financial stress (at least for the foreseeable future), my roommates and I sweet talked my roommate's boyfriend into buying us beer and ate chicken teriyaki and brownies for dinner. We rented Hardy Candy, sat down, and began our own private party.

I had heard about Hardy Candy before, but living in a small market as I do, the number of independent films that come through town is very low. So I had to wait until it was released on DVD. The film is definitely worth it. We watched it in the safe confines of our living room, the six of us (two people don't actually live there but they might as well). Three girls, three boys. By the time the castration scene was over, two boys and one girl left. By the time the film was over, only two of us were left. And I have to use this space to declare Ellen Page as a revelation. If I ever need a sweet faced bitch in a movie (if I ever write a screenplay), she's first in line. She carries the movie start to finish. This is one of those films you watch and say later, yeah, this is how it started for her. She was okay in X-Men 3 - her role not being terribly challenging - but here, to walk the line between crazy, cunning, and sympathetic, she pulled it off. I wanted to let this girl loose on all those loser pedophiles they catch on that news show on Wednesday nights.

The film was markedly okay - the style was cool and the pacing was intense - but Ellen Page rocked the boat, so to speak. Even my two dogs didn't move. Not even when we dropped a brownie on the floor. My roommate's boyfriend - being squeamish - closed his eyes and left in the middle. But I could take it. So. Go rent. Hard Candy. Now.

The icing on the cake was that I got to watch the season premiere of Grey's Anatomy, which I missed yesterday because I had to attend a poetry reading. Gotta admit... I love that show. In fact, as we washed the dishes after our private party was over, my roommates agreed that I was indeed, a Geek. And our friend, a native Colombian, asked for the translation. All I could do was shrug and say, somebody with a slightly quirky obsession. My other roommate snickered and said, no, a geek is somebody with a weird obsession. So yeah. I'm just a geek who finally gets paid on Monday.
