The Origin of Halloween

The origin of halloween dates back to the pre-Christian celtic days. It was a pre-Christian celtic festival of the dead. The celtic people divided the year by four major holidays. According to their calendar, the beginning of the year started November 1st, marking the beginning of winter.

The festival was called Samhain ( it was pronounced Sah-Ween). It was the most important holiday of the celtic year. They believed at the time of Samhain, ghosts and other supernatural beings considered dead were more prone to travel amongst the living, more than any other time of the year. The reason why this theory was thought of is because during Samhain, people believed that those who died during the year traveled to the "other world."

People gathered together during Samhain to sacrifice animals, fruits, and vegetables. In honor of the dead, they also lit bonfires. These bonfires were not only to honor the dead, it was believed that it would help them on their journey, and ultimately keep them away from the living. All supernatural beings were "allegedly" present on that day, such as ghosts, fairies, and demons. Its all apart of the dark and dreadfulness of Samhain.

Samhain supposedly became halloween when the Christians attempted to alter the religious practices of the celtic people. The Christian people labeled the celtics "devil worshipers", due to their religious practices, especially on Samhain.

Christians were on a mission to eliminate all pagan holidays. Although Christians didn't succeed in wiping out the holidays, they managed to alter them, which turned Samhain into halloween. Many people believe that the origin of halloween was based on Satanism, but it was actually inspired by Christians due to the changes of Samhain. But the real origin of halloween is Samhain, a pagan holiday.

The early supernatural deities of Samhain were branded as "evil", and were thought to be associated with Satan. Even the underworld of celtics became the Christian damnation "Hell".
