Ouch My Butt Hurts! AKA Adventures in Stationary Bicycling

Have you found yourself a few pounds heavier after hibernating all winter? Did the joys and comfort of comfort food add some padding in some places you didn't want quite so heavily padded? Are you finally ready to begin the excercise program that was part of your new year's resolutions? From January 2005, that is? If, like me, you really aren't all that fond of the knee pain that can come along with jogging and running, then I may just have the solution for you. Let me introduce you to the stationary bike.

When buying a stationary bike, there are some key points to remember.

1. Make sure the seat, handlebars and resistance are easily adjustable. After all, the point of a stationary bike is to get a workout while riding it, not while adjusting it.

2. Always make sure the frame is solid and doesn't sway during pedaling. That's right, get on it. Don't just
stand there and look at it. After all, you wouldn't
spend hard earned money on a couch without first
sitting on it. If an employee tells you to remove
your rump from their equipment, go somewhere else.

3. Check out the flywheel. Be sure it is large enough
to simulate the pedaling motion of an outdoor bike.

4. Do the pedals have toestraps? You want these to keep your feet from slipping and allow you to apply force
on both the upstroke and the downstroke.

5. Be sure the monitor is easy to reach and that you
understand the work report. This will save you from the "gosh, I'm stupid" moment

6. The seat should be padded and comfortable. That's right, the seat, not your backside. Also, be sure the height is adjustable. Don't just sit on it in an immitation of the bust of Ceasar. Move that butt around!

After doing all this and before making your final decision, consider the warranty, maintenance requirements and the customer service that is offered. One final thing to keep in mind is the price. While you don't have to purchase the most expensive item on the market, a slightly higher priced model will usually pay off in longevity, safety and desired features.

So go on, get up, head to the local sporting goods store and make Bush proud. You really weren't planning on saving that stimulus check, were you?
