Our First Dog - Sarah

Our First Dog - Sarah

As I was growing up, my family always had a dog around the house. So as soon as my husband and I got married, of course I wanted a dog. Our lives were not complete without one!

The first couple of years that we were married, the place where we lived did not allow dogs. We ended up moving to Stockton, California, where we lived in a small duplex that, praise the Lord, would allow us to have a dog! I began to look for the perfect puppy right away. I was not really sure exactly what type of dog I wanted, I just knew we had to have a dog to make our family complete.

Of course, at the time, we were not making very much money on a Youth Pastor’s salary, so I had to find a breed that we could afford to purchase. I shared with my mom our desire to get a puppy and she began to help with the search by looking in her local paper every so often.

A couple of months into our search, mom found her. She called me up and told she had found the perfect puppy, a little female buff colored Cocker Spaniel. She was six weeks old and would be available to go to a new home in a couple of weeks. Mom also told me not to worry about the cost of the puppy, because she and Dad would take care of it. What a blessing!

Mom picked up the puppy from the breeder when she was 8 weeks old and kept her at their house in Reno, Nevada, until we could come and get her. I decided to name the puppy Sarah and would register her with AKC as Sarah’s Merry Sunshine (because of her golden coat).

The day came for us to pick up our new addition to the family. My husband and I drove from Stockton, California and met up with my mom and my grandma (who came along for the ride and to visit with us ever so briefly). Mom and grandma drove from Reno and met us at the Boreal Ridge Ski Resort in Truckee, California. The Ski Resort was the half-way point for us. I was so excited, this would be our first time seeing our new baby. Mom had Sarah in a card board box with an old blanket to lay on. My husband and I each held her for a bit. She was so cute, she won our hearts right away. She slept in the box most of the way home (I had to hold her some of the time!).

After Sarah became a part of our family, every so often I would catch my husband talking to her. He would remind her how we found her “wandering around at the top of Boreal Ridge” as he put it. How blessed we were to have found her.
