Outhouses of Past and Present – Thank Goodness for Indoor Plumbing!

A couple weeks ago, it was 22 degrees below zero for nearly a week. On several occasions when I had to go outside, fully bundled, I thought, “How on earth did our ancestors survive the Outhouse era in this frigid weather?!” I grew up with the luxury of indoor plumbing as did my Mom and Dad, but I remember my grandparents reflecting back upon the days of having to walk to the Outhouse in the cold and snow. All I can say is, “Thank goodness for indoor plumbing!”

Relative to the history of mankind, indoors plumbing is fairly new in the majority of homes. In fact, there are still many people alive today who remember the Outhouse from personal childhood experience. The old Outhouse has become an important symbol in history. So much so, that some people strive to preserve the few that are left, build new replicas in tribute of the old, or record their history and pictures.

“The Outhouses of America Tour” is a world-famous site dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Outhouses. The site features pictures and history of over 200 old and new Outhouses submitted by Outhouse enthusiasts around the world. Take a look just to reminisce or to brag to your kids and grandchildren about “The Good Ol’ Days”.

Interesting!

This is so weird. We recently had a friend of the family die and she was also 93. The review of her life at the memorial service is what prompted me to dig up this outhouse link I've had on my favorites for a couple years. I have an idea for a related Xombyte but got sidetracked with the Thalidomide byte. It's interesting to talk to older people that even with all the conveniences, still preferred to live what they considered a simple life. I'm not so sure I would consider it a simple life though! I enjoy most of our modern conveniences. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Earn for Your Writing on Xomba Earn for Your Writing on Bukisa Check Out My Writing on Bukisa

My grandmother,who just died

My grandmother, who just died two months ago at age 93 used to tell stories about using the outhouse as a young girl. She was very glad when she was able to have a real bathroom. Her sister who died about 15 years ago never had any plumbing in her home except in the kitchen. She had an outhouse and used a washtub for bathing. All of her siblings offered repeatedly to have a bathroom installed for her but she always said no. Crazy, huh? I'm glad to be living in the 21st century.
