Overheard from the Lifeguard Tower Last Night
posted August 22, 2006 - 6:41pmI think, what's the point? And then I look out there,
and what can you say to that?
It is beyond words.
[pause]
Saw Nevada today.
She's back in town?
Yeah, she was up there in--
Alaska, right?
Yeah, Anchorage.
When'd she get back?
When'd she get back? This morning. Are you surprised?
Oh [hits his head], man! I'm an idiot. I-I forgot
for a moment there.
It is bizarre, like a dream.
How'd she take it...I mean...
She looked pretty out of it. Had a hell of a time
up there, but, you know...
She'll be around for, what, a week or so?
Her contract's up end of August, I think she said.
Actually, she's not going back. The run was slow,
so they'd probably send her packing, anyway.
Huh.
Is there something I'm missing here?
What--no, no. I mean, we keep in touch.
We've been writing, you know, but--
Just writing?
Well, we see each other...every once in a while.
See each other.
Well, saw each other, before Alaska. Just in passing.
Or we'll have coffee, things like that.
Platonic.
Yeah...for the most part.
For the most part--what does that mean?
[sighs] Man, what're you asking?
I don't know--what're you not telling?
Hey, now am I missing something here?
[man stands up, leans into the railing, face to the ocean,
his silhouette against a backdrop of stars]
Sure are a lot of 'em.
[laughs] Are you telling me it's you and her?
When it's not you and her.
What do you know?
[turns around] I know some things.
