posted February 3, 2008 - 5:55am
Pain in the neck:

Cervical spondylitis occurs as a result of aging and changes in the joints of the vertebral column, mostly due to the wearing of discs in between the different vertebrae, which in turn impacts the bones and tissues of the vertebral column.Any activity that puts undue stress on the neck for prolonged periods can cause this condition.Earlier, it was seen in people around 50-55 years of age. However, nowadays there have been unmerous cases where the patient's age has been as low as 35 years. It may affect males earlier than females.

Symptoms:

1)Neck pain (may radiate to the arms or shoulders)

2)Loss of sensation or abnormal sensation of the shoulders, arms and (rarely) legs

3)Weakness of the arms and sometimes of thhe legs too

4)Neck stiffness that progressively worsens

5)Loss of balance

6)Headaches,particularly in the back of the head

7)Loss of control of the bladder or bowels (if spinal cord is compressed)

Prevention:

It is difficult to prevent this condition, but you can reduce the risk of developing it.

1)Take a break when driving long distance, watching TV or working on a computer.Don't hold your head in the same position for very long period.

2)Protect your neck from injury by using a seatbelt when sitting in a car.

3)Those who smoke and consume tobacco in any form should stop it completely.

4)Practice a good posture.

Diet:

1)What we eat during the age 10-30 years helps build bone density.

2)To have strong and healthy bones, consume food containing calcium and vitamin D and do some form of physical exercise.

3) Your diet should include skimmed milk, eggs, green and other coloured vegetables and fruits.

4)Also,20 to 30 minutes of exposure to sunlight everyday.
