Palin Should Drop Out, Says Conservative Columnist Kathleen Parker
posted September 27, 2008 - 11:29amThe choice of Sarah Palin as running mate seemed at first a stroke of genius to many conservatives. Now that Palin has taken her first steps into the limelight, however, some Republicans are having second thoughts. Conservative columnist Kathleen Parker, writing in the National Review, says that recent media interviews have shown that Palin is sorely lacking in experience, and is calling for her to drop out.
Parker says that she was wishing and hoping for Palin to succeed, and was delighted when John McCain first named her to be his running mate. But Parker says it has now become clear that "Palin is a problem."
"Quick study or not, she doesn’t know enough about economics and foreign policy to make Americans comfortable with a President Palin should conditions warrant her promotion," Parker writes.
While secretly pulling for Palin, Parker says "Palin’s recent interviews with Charles Gibson, Sean Hannity, and now Katie Couric have all revealed an attractive, earnest, confident candidate. Who Is Clearly Out Of Her League."
Parker says that when listening to Palin in her recent interviews, her "cringe reflex" is exhausted. "Palin filibusters. She repeats words, filling space with deadwood. Cut the verbiage and there’s not much content there."
Parker notes that McCain couldn't drop Palin from the ticket without incurring the wrath of conservatives and women, so she is calling for Palin to drop out, and maybe cite personal concerns (such as caring for her new baby) as a reason.
"Do it for your country," Parker says.
