Promoting your Xombytes Part 3: The Technorati Do Exist! (PoisedGuru)

No wait, that’s Illuminati I’m thinking of... well who the heck are these Technorati then?

Well Technorati is the self proclaimed “recognized authority on what's going on in the world of weblogs. We help people search for, surface, and organize bloggers and their daily posts.”

Wow, how do I get that job?!

So Technorati ranks weblogs based on how many other sites link to the weblog. This is important because they feel that the more places that link to a page means the more important the page is. They say it ‘revolutionized’ the way internet searching is done. It is true that many believe this same principle is a prime factor in the Google ranking of its search results, so perhaps they’re on to something.

Here are some interesting facts from Technorati

  • According to Technorati data, there are about 75,000 new blogs a day.
  • Bloggers update their weblogs regularly; there are about 1.2 million posts daily, or about 50,000 blog updates an hour.

Well… WOW. But what about all those other _log things like vlogs and podcasts and stuff?

Increasingly, Technorati tracks other forms of citizen media, including video blogs (vlogs), podcasts, and amateur movies and videos --all in real time.

So how’s this place work? Well you sign up and claim your blog which attaches your Xombytes page and it’s then part of your user account. In essence that’s all there is to it. Simply update your Xombytes and submit a ping to Technorati and they will update their database to include your newest posting. They provide some of the most complex tools I have ever seen for searching and browsing online ‘citizen media’ as they call it. I sort of like the term.

People can also add entire sites to their “favorites” so they can easily login and check all the updates in one central location. Quite nice if you are trying to read hundreds of posts from hundreds of places. With the ranking system you will always know where you stand in relation to the other members of the site. It might be distressing to see your Xombyte space is ranked 220,000th until you realize that a blog with no links to it at all is no higher than 1,800,000 probably. So making the top 220,000 is quite a feat! Even 12 links from external sites gets you up to 930,000th. Don’t have 12 websites you can link to your Xombytes from? I’m sure you can find them.

There is, as always, a most popular area of the site that shows the top Favorited (is that even a verb?), top searches and tags, and top blogs in general. Engadget heads the list currently with 26,920 links…wow. They also have top movies, news and books, the last linking to Amazon.com.

Users can also create Watchlists which is a way to save some time and typing. This feature allows you or anyone else for that matter to save their most common searches. I imagine you could use this to your benefit again by making certain that the tags in your posts and on your account include the same thing over and over again. If I were to do it I suppose I would use my Xomba username…

The best way to use Technorati is to make your account and then make links to your Xombyte page or have your friends run links to your Xombyte page from anywhere they can without spamming or doing something that could otherwise be construed as immoral or illegal.
