Past Tense vs. Present Tense?

Past Tense vs. Present Tense?

First off I find it strange there is no writing category on a site dedicated to writing :)

Ok on to the meat of the topic. I have read several books that state the standard narrative tense is past tense though on occasion present tense is used to tell a story. These books have said that the reader is more detached from present tense.

Personally I find that strange. I think that writing in present tense brings the action to life more than in past tense. So when I wrote the second book I told it completely in the present. Recently reading part of balaspa's preview post and some further investigation I see many people use past tense.

So how do you all feel about writing a story in past vs. present? Which do you prefer to use? Which tense do you actually like to read more? Have you ever bothered to think about it? I am beginning the reading and editing phase of the second book and I am contemplating if I should change the story to past tense from its current present tense configuration. Am I just being over-analytical?

ARGH!

I see what you're saying and

I see what you're saying and think present tense could work. I guess it's a matter of conditioning, but I personally find past tense easier to follow. Flyswatter Xomba Moderator

Hmm...

So there I am sitting at my computer thinking 'Gee this might be something...' No not really, it sounds like I am seeing it through the main character's eyes. I look both ways and then cross the street but a car still comes out of nowhere and almost runs me over. See what I mean? I know there are some good books that have been in present I'm just curious what everyone else thinks because I haven't quite decided yet for this one. The first book was in past tense...I think heh.

I think past tense is more

I think past tense is more effective because that's how we typically talk about events that have already occurred. The act of telling a story implies that it's a past event and ready to be told. If somebody's telling you about a past event in present tense, doesn't part of your mind find the overlay of past and present a little jolting? Flyswatter Xomba Moderator
