Payments for Recycling

Payments for Recycling

I’m tired of being punished because of other people's actions and choices.

The environmentalist would like us all to recycle. I don’t have a problem with the idea, the purpose or the need to do this for a cleaner, safer environment. I do have a problem with the government obstacles and hoops that I have to jump through in order to recycle.

Thanks to some unknown people, I am now harassed and penalized if I want to recycle. It first started with the people who litter, to ‘encourage’ recycling; the State of California implemented a mandatory fee on all aluminum cans, plastic bottles and glass beverage containers. I have to pay for others’ laziness and lack of consideration.

Then, when the price of copper and other recyclable metals went up, some people decided to make a profit from this - illegally, by stealing copper piping from homes and wire from city lights. Now, the State of California has implemented another “punishment” for those of us who want to recycle. You now must provide your driver’s license (or Picture ID), a fingerprint and the name of your business and address (if it is construction type materials). Even for aluminum cans, if the payment is over a certain amount, you have to provide this personal information. For soda addicts, it’s not difficult to meet this limit. So, once again, the people who want to help in cleaning up the environment are punished, in some cases, twice. You have already paid a recycling fee on the cans or have spent your time in cleaning up the neighborhood.

In performing home repairs and maintenance work, part of our service is to haul away “jobsite debris” if the customer wants us to. We do not charge the customer for this; it is a courtesy service and considered part of the job. When we remove old copper pipe, faucets, electrical wire and even toilets and toilet parts, we break them down into recyclable and non-recyclable bins. It has been our practice that we save this up throughout the year and in December we take it all to the recycle center. The money we get back is the money we use for Christmas. However, this past December we were hit with obstacles of having to provide all this information before we could receive payment. Not only is this now a harassing chore, but also if we return over a certain amount of recycling, we get hit with a 1099-misc reporting ‘earnings’ to the government and then we are taxed for recycling. UGH!

Come on “some people” stop being so greedy! I’m tired of being punished because of other people’s actions and choices.

Drugs and Recycling

This is a very valid point. I know of the recycling to get money for drugs. When I lived in the high desert it was a common practice. However, I doubt that stopping the war will stop the problem. Granted some drugs aren't as bad as the media and reports claim, but some are. The people I knew were actually owners of meth labs or at least aids to them. To me, the people operating the recycling centers should use common sense when accepting recycling products. If the wire is sheathed and is many strands thick, question it. If the copper is shiny, like it is brand new, question it, ask for a business name, but don't demand all the other crap. I should not have to prove I have a right to recycle. Recycling pain

Yes, it is a big pain. We'll probably go more often with smaller loads to alleviate the hassle of the "over $50" demands. Another thing is that if you do not have a business name when recycling large amounts of copper and wire, then you have to wait for the check to be mailed to you. They do a background check for the individual without a business. Hooray for the governemnt in helping and promoting recycling! MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles! War On Drugs and Recycler Harassment

As, a post script (PS) to my comment about the harassment caused to recyclers by metal thieves, here's a link explaining why we need to stop the war-on-drugs. If the war stops, so, will the harassment, but, that's not to say that the government will roll-back the rules, but, stopping the war is a good beginning-point for rolling back the rules. Here's the link: The War on Drugs and why it will never be won http://www.xomba.com/war_drugs_and_why_will_never_be_won

Recyclers Hard Work Being Supressed By Failed War On Drugs

All this ID for this, and ID for that, is a direct result of the of the failed War On Drugs! It's users of meth and other stimulants who are at the root of all this ID crap. Additionally, the theft of identification, bank information, and other personal information started with results of the failed War On Drugs. The harder it became to purchase these, once legal products ( yes, they were available in over-the-counter and prescriptions), the more crime occurred and continues to occur. Theft of metals has risen to epidemic proportions, and rather than fix the real problem's root by stopping the War On Drugs, it is now considered ok to harass good people through more and more paperwork required to simply legally recycle. If you want to stop a problem, kill it at the root, kill the War On Drugs! "It does matter what you believe, but, what you believe does not matter if you do not act upon your beliefs." "poverty forces one to "recycle" things"

Nice one! However, in this State, recycling can add to poverty and loss of privacy. No wonder why identity theft is so easy, people are forced to give out their personal information to too many unknowns. MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles! Sounds Very Frustrating

indeed, MJ. That's Government...! Thankfully, in India we have better setups for recycling and it is in fact become a way of life here. Besides, poverty forces one to "recycle" things anyway! Get money writing articles on Xomba Here

As a kid, we use to be able to take them back to the store and get money back right there. Of course we would turn around and buy candy. Now though, it is not so easy or convenient. MJ - Sending happy thoughts and Smiles! Avatar: Betrayal and Retribution http://www.valkyrieart.com/Poser1.html
