Pearl Harbor Observance
Today's Pearl Harbor Day commemoration, remembering the 66th anniversary of the Dec. 7, 1941 bombing attack on Pearl Harbor was attended by close to 50 survivors. In that Pearl Harbor attack, the US Navy suffered its greatest defeat with twenty-one ships were sunk or damaged. American deaths totaled 2,390.
The National Park Service and the US Navy hosted a joint memorial ceremony commemorating the 66th anniversary of the attack at Naval Station Pearl Harbor's Kilo Pier this morning. Admiral Robert F. Willard, the commander of US Pacific Fleet, served as the keynote speaker.
At 7:55 a.m., the exact moment of the attack, a moment of silence was observed.

That's a great view of the Memorial showing the ship beneath
That's one thing about seeing the ship below with over a thousand of her crew still interred--it reminds us that there was a real ship with a real crew who died in a real attack and it wasn't some abstract attack that only took place in history books.

I appreciate your comment jdubhub. It's a very moving experience to spend time at the Arizona memorial - hard to explain in actual words because it's so very personal. Each person that visits the Arizona has a unique emotional reaction to the wreckage - most are changed forever.
