Penobscot Bay schooner cruise bounds o'er Maine
posted August 16, 2007 - 2:19amRaising the sails and cruising in the breeze past scenic villages and uninhabited islands, to anchor each evening in a quiet cove where you can watch the sun set to the sounds of seabirds calling and waves lapping against the hull - it's as idyllic as it sounds.
The
Evans is 65 feet long on deck, 99 feet overall and started life in 1884, hauling oysters on Chesapeake Bay. It was refitted in 1973 with 12 small but comfortable cabins (some with double berths) to carry up to 22 passengers. It is now used to sail the waters of Penobscot Bay in Maine each summer and fall, offering vacation tours of the scenic coastline and islands.
