Phoenix Spacecraft on Track for Mars Landing
Phoenix Spacecraft on Track for Mars Landing
The Phoenix Spacecraft is set for a landing on the Northern Arctic area of Mars, on May 25. Below this area is a layer of water-ice, mixed with sand and dust.
Phoenix will use its 7.7 foot robotic arm to dig up samples of the dirty mix to analyze with its on-board science instruments.
The hope is that this will shed some light as to possible life on Mars.
It's developers ( NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.) say Phoenix is a good name for the lander because its development has risen from two failed previous attempts to land a similar lander on Mars, one, being the failed Mars Polar Lander (MPL), which failed to land softly near Mars' south pole.
The 420 million dollar spacecraft was launched last August.
The Phoenix, if successful, will join two other wandering nomads on the surface, Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, both, very successful.
