Pit Bulls are Being Scrutinized, Again

My dad's insurance agent recently paid a visit to his home. He was to discuss with my dad about possibly adding more insurance coverage to his house and property. My dad and the insurance agent were engaged in conversation when the family dog approached. "Oh goodness, down boy" the insurance man exclaimed! "What's the matter?" my dad asked. "I've heard bad things about pit bulls" the agent remarked. "He is the friendliest dog we've ever had, just look at him wagging his tail, he likes you!" my dad replied.

Out of courtesy for his guest my dad put his dog in another room and closed the door. When he sat back down at the table the conversation changed from adding more house insurance to pit bulls, and why my dad is not allowed to own one while being insured by this company. He now has one month to find his dog a new home or his insurance will be canceled.

I do not know the ins and outs of the insurance agent's justification as to why my dad cannot have his pitbull at the residence, and be insured by him. I do not agree with it. In fact, I think it is asinine. My dad's pit bull is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever met. We own the dog's daughter, she is also as sweet as can be.

I am a dog groomer and I handle hundreds of dogs each year. I have not come across a pit bull in my grooming shop that I did not like. I am never fearful of them; they are always friendly and quite docile. A dog should be respected just as a person should. A dog's behavior is very highly influenced by its environment and "pack." A dog can certainly be trained to be harmful and aggressive, a dog can much more easily be trained to be a loving member of the family. It will never be fair that pit bulls have such a "bad rap" due entirely to the people who have chosen to breed pits and train them to fight in rings. Illegal gambling and animal cruelty is what these people participate in, they should be punished, not the innocent pit bulls.
