Planting Avocados

We're all aware of the health benefits that the Avocado provides. There are Avocado facial and skin care products; heck, we can even mash a fresh Avocado and smear it on our face for softer, smmother skin. We eat Avocados in our sandwiches and salads and make our own guacamole.

For all the Avocado's positive qualities, one thing's for certain. We're always left with that big slimy pit. If you're like most of us, you toss it in the garbage and rinse your hands. But did you know you can grow an Avocado tree from that pit? Just follow these steps and you'll be potting your new tree in no time. Here's what you'll need:

A fresh Avocado pit (the bigger, the better)
A tall, clear glass container
Toothpicks

Rinse your Avocado pit. You'll notice that the Avocado seed has a flattened end where it once grew from the tree. This is the end that will sit in water until the root sprouts.

So that the Avocado will balance on the rim of your glass container, push 4 - 6 toothpicks into the pit. Balance your Avocado pit on the rim of your container and fill with water. Now place your container on a bright, sunny windowsill.

Slowly but surely, your Avocado seed will split at the bottom. Shortly thereafter, the root will begin to sprout. You'll also begin to see the top of the seed split and eventually the actual tree will begin to grow.

Let your Avocado seed continue to root in water until there is at least one root that touches the bottom of the glass container. Your Avocado tree will also continue to grow during this period and you'll begin to notice buds forming. When the Avocado seed has grown a good, strong root, you can repot it into soil.

Planting your Avocado is as easy as repotting any of your other plants. Just be sure to choose a good sized container. You'll be surprised how fast the Avocado tree will grow. Place your potted Avocado tree in a sunny window.

Avocado trees can take up to 30 years to produce fruit, so it's unlikely that you'll ever pick an Avocado from your tree. But while you're waiting, you'll enjoy the beauty of your tree for years to come.
