Plaxico Burress to prison for shooting HIMSELF: Yahoo!
posted September 24, 2009 - 1:49pmThe title of a recently released Yahoo! article is "Ex NY-Giant Burress Gets 2 Years in Gun Case". We're still trying to figure exactly why Burress shot himself. In other words, was this really only a case of carrying a gun with a suspended license (as this report indicates/suggests) or is there some other explanation?
Of course, there were theatrics and there was also a lot of drama as Burress arrived in court to surrender and begin his sentence and afterwards as well. Antonio Pierce, Burress' former teammate (Burress' has been kicked off the New York Giants' football team), who was with Burress when the gun went off and accompanied him to a local hospital to get treatment, has not been implicated in this scandal.
Burress was with his wife Tiffany, who is 3 months pregnant, his 3-year-old son Elijah, his stepmother and his grandmother.
He was quite emotional while standing before Judge Michael Melkonian: "I want to apologize to my family". Burress should also be apologizing to his fans who regarded him as a hero after he caught the winning touchdown pass in the 2008 Super Bowl, as well as his coaches and his teammates FOR LETTING THEM DOWN...BIG TIME.
Compare this to what he said on ESPN back in April: "When I get out, I'll be 33, not 43. I'll still be able to run and catch. I'll still have the God-given ability to snag footballs; that's what I love to do. Of course I want to play again". This sounds arrogant especially the "When I get out, I'll be 33, not 43". It sounds like Burress is implying that Burress thinks that people don't know how to count.
According to Gil Brandt, an NFL Sirius Radio analyst and former head of player personnel for the Dallas Cowboys, "First of all, Plaxico is a guy who keeps himself in PRETTY GOOD shape. LOTS OF TIMES, guys get heavy in the offseason. HE is not a guy who has done that". Perhaps Brandt hasn't considered the fact that this guy will be in an orange prison jumpsuit for at least the next 2 years.
According to Burress' attorney Benjamin Brafman on the day of the plea bargain, "This was not an intentional criminal act. In my judgment, a two-year prison sentence is a very severe punishment". If Burress feels that this is the case, he and his legal team should appeal the verdict. "This is a very real tragic case in many, many ways". This is just the latest example of how, when you are a celebrity, as Plaxico Burress clearly is, ONE MISTAKE CAN TURN YOUR WORLD UPSIDE DOWN AND INSIDE OUT.
